It's been a while in the making but the downtown area of Cincinnati is now worth a look. Several sports bars and restaurants fill up after games at the arena, as well as those at the Great American Ball park which is just next door.
Crave
Right next to the Great American Ballpark, Crave keeps diners guessing with its wide variety of dishes, ranging from sushi and dumplings, to quesadillas and burgers with fries.
Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse
It's a classic steakhouse with all that brings: lively crowds, noise, and - of course - generous portions of succulent meat. The price tag might raise an eyebrow or two but once you've perused some sides like mashed potato and asparagus, plus some red wine truffle sauce, your appetite may just win out.
Strong's Brick Oven Pizzeria
Arguably the best way to treat dough: top it with plum tomatoes imported from Italy, drizzle over some extra virgin olive oil, and cook it all in a brick oven for that crispy base. These guys pride themselves on a great menu of slices including dessert options like apple pizza with caramel sauce.
Goettafest
If a city has designed its own sausage, it's only right there should be an honorary festival. Cincinnati celebrates the oat-filled food, inspired by the area's German heritage, with four days in August where Ohio's scenic Waterfront is filled with Goetta-eating contests, Goetta ring tossing, and other questionable games involving the meat.
Head for downtown Cincinnati, then follow the signs to the coliseum. The venue is located on the Ohio River right next to Great American Ballpark, Paul Brown Stadium, and The Banks.
You can get something a bit different. Namely, Cincinnati's own oat, pork and spice sausage known as Goetta; plus novelty offerings like 'hockey helmet nachos'. Or, if you're happy enough with burger and fries, you won't have to go far for these either. Everything can be washed down with a worthy beer selection including local brews like those from Hudepohl and Christian Moerlein.
Parking at the nearby East Garage will set you back $6, and the Broadway Lot, $5. If you get dizzy circling around for a space, drive a block north of the arena on Broad, or out to the west around Pete Rose Way.
Two hours beforehand, giving you plenty of time to settle in before the concert or game.
If you get separation anxiety from your electrical devices, now might be the time to start prepping. No iPads can be used to take pics or record, and the same goes for any camera with a detachable or long lens.
