A mixture of opulence and...

Liked: The decor of the hotel is very good and looks opulent. Reception, bar staff and other staff encountered were very friendly. Our room had good sea views beyond Southsea common
Disliked: The room was small for the price paid. There was no hot water to our room. When we contacted reception was told" i have been told to trell you to run the tap for at least 10 mins, even though very wasteful. This said to me knew there was a problem but hadn't been addressed. ran the taps dfor 30 mins, still no hot water, Contacted reception again who said they would contact maintenance. Apparently they restarted the boilers and we did have hot water the next morning but again had to run the taps for 10 minutes. Breakfast was good when it arrived but the service was chaotic and appeared to be completely uncoordinated. The gentleman on the next table had to wait at least 30 mins for his breakfast .

Not sure I would stay...

Liked: Food quality was very good. Service at dinner was very good. Room was clean and water hot. Plenty of car parking. Room was quiet. Staff were pleasant and helpful.
Disliked: Room was small and dreary outlook dreadful. Room numbering was so confusing and signage poor. Breakfast took an hour to arrive, toast was late and no sauce was delivered to my table. Some room lighting did not work.

after a very rocky start...

Liked: gracious property with a lot of history. all staff were helpful and accommodating
Disliked: we were allocated third floor, un-refurbished rooms which were tiny. We had no hot water. this is apparently a common, well known problem After a fuss we and our travelling companions were moved to other rooms on the second floor for showers and were re-allocated new, larger renovated rooms which made the remainder of our stay pleasant. it is a pity that third floor rooms are used in this way as the staff were moving many guests around as rooms became available

Weekend break

Liked: Good position. Just need to walk across the common to the sea front. Near a bus stop. Handy for the hovercraft to the Isle of Wight.
Disliked: The room we where given needed updating. Two small high windows with opaque glass. Very old tv. Only one station working.Unfortunately we had no hot water but reception said maintenance would fix it but it wasn?t fixed but we where upgraded to a lovely sea view room.Big bathroom and modern tv. When booking the hotel it showed a big garden with lawn but on arrival the garden was closed as it was being paved over with borders and containers. Have had better breakfast but only used the dining room once.

Two nights stay in Portsmouth

Liked: Excellent location for access to Isle of Wight ferry and historic dockyard attractions, all easily served by frequent bus service adjacent to hotel.
Disliked: Problem with hot water in bath and washbasin, resulting in our having to wash and bathe in an empty room on the same corridor.
