The Spotlight on HI New Orleans Hostel

Budget-Friendly, Social Vibes in the Heart of New Orleans

Modern and welcoming, HI New Orleans Hostel is located right on Canal Street in downtown New Orleans—just steps from the city's top music venues, nightlife, and streetcar lines. This 3-star hostel blends affordability with convenience, offering stylish dorms and private rooms, a lively social scene, and thoughtful amenities like air conditioning, free WiFi, and a 24-hour front desk.
Whether you’re in town for a big show or a weekend-long music festival, this hostel makes it easy to stay close to the action without stretching your budget.

Why Concert-goers love it

Concert fans appreciate the prime location—within walking distance of the Caesars Superdome, Saenger Theatre, and other top music venues. With 24-hour front desk service and flexible luggage storage, late-night arrivals or post-concert crash landings are no problem. The hostel also stays relatively quiet in the sleeping areas, despite the buzzing social atmosphere in common spaces. Plus, there's easy access to public transportation and late-night food nearby.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a fun, budget-friendly base
  • Solo travelers hoping to meet fellow music lovers
  • Couples making a music-filled weekend getaway
  • Fans who want to retreat to a quieter room after the show
  • Budget-conscious music fans who’d rather spend on tickets than lodging

Food and Drink Options

The on-site restaurant and bar make grabbing a bite before or after a show easy. While there's no 24/7 room service, the shared kitchen lets you whip up a late-night snack. Plus, a continental, American, or vegetarian breakfast is available—perfect after a late night out. Being on Canal Street also means there are plenty of eateries within walking distance.

Nightlife Options

While the hostel itself doesn’t offer live music, its central location places you just minutes from Bourbon Street, Frenchmen Street, and countless live music venues and bars. The hostel’s own bar is a great spot to start the night or unwind with new friends over a local brew.

What People Say

Guests love the cleanliness, the friendly staff, and the central location. Many reviews highlight the hostel’s modern design and welcoming atmosphere. Travelers also appreciate the balance between social common areas and quiet dorms or private rooms. The value for money gets consistent praise, especially for those in town for music events.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that the rooms can be a bit small, especially dorms with multiple bunks. Others mention that the elevator can be slow during peak hours. Still, most agree these are small trade-offs for the price and location.

The Bottom Line

If you’re headed to New Orleans for a concert and want a clean, social, and affordable place to crash nearby, HI New Orleans Hostel hits all the right notes.

Great hostel, shitty guests

Liked: Having travelled across the country and stayed at many hostels, this is the best one in terms of facilities.Spacious, clean and the staff are polite
Disliked: Because this hostel is in New Orleans, it is quite busy and there are some not very decent guests.I had a strange encounter with a foreign guest. I left my room key in my room, so I waited for a roommate to come back and open the door for me so I could retrieve my key. Instead of helping me, the guest stood there in the corridor for a minute watching me before trying to intimidate me and one up me in a strange way to assert dominance, for no good reason. I found the encounter very odd and the lovely receptionist helped me change my room, which I really appreciated.Other weird guests include people smoking in the toilets then coming back to dorms stinking up the place. And another guest threw up late at night in a bag in the room, which was disgusting. Now I know the hostel cannot control who stays but it’s just something I thought worth sharing as bad encounters can ruin your whole stay and your overall perception of the city.Nevertheless, this is the best hostel I stayed in during my time in the US. The staff and facilities are excellent. Maybe I was just unlucky with the people during my stay, but I won’t let that affect my rating, because this place really deserves a full 10*.

Great Hostel in iconic city

Liked: Nice hostel, typical 'Hi USA' hostel, clean, comfortable, nice rooms, with curtains on the beds for privacy, lockers for each bed, complete kitchen for cooking and big common rooms on the ground floor and next to the kitchen. Outlet in your bed for charging phone. Hostel is close to Bourbon street / French Quarter, as well as the WWII museum and the main drag of New Orleans, so very convenient for a tourist visitor. There are a lot of music places in the various streets and quite a few eateries.
Disliked: The street the hostel is on has a lot of homeless people and while I was there, one followed a guest in through the door and tried to enter the hostel. You need to be mindful on Canal street.

Great location and full of...

Liked: Fabulous hostel experience! Would definitely stay again. Loved the single bathrooms with showers and how clean everything was. The mattresses were comfortable. There was a fan in my room that I was able to use to be cool enough to sleep at night. So close to all the action and right on the trolley routes and 3 blocks from the express airport shuttle.
Disliked: My food was taken out of the frig by another guest. When I talked to the front desk I was told that sometimes happens and that it’s time consuming to go over the camera footage. It happened during a specific time frame so would’ve been easy enough to look at the camera. Also my locker was open twice after I left the room. I could’ve mistakenly not locked it right but since I checked it every time after locking it I don’t think that was it. Also wouldn’t explain why the door was actually open. Nothing was missing from my luggage but I kept all valuables, money, and passport with me. I also talked to the front desk about this since it happened two out of the 3 days I was there and she offered to come show me how the locks worked. Anyways I declined but was more bothered about missing food. Next time I’ll figure out a way to keep food more secure.

Very good

Liked: Close to the French quarter. Security was very good. I felt safe. They need to change the add about breakfast on the internet. NONE available.
Disliked: First time user. I didn't get all the info about this facility. Would have been nice to know what was available to use before hand.
