The Spotlight on University Place Hotel and Conference Center

Affordable Comfort in the Heart of Downtown Portland

Modern yet unpretentious, University Place Hotel and Conference Center is located right on the Portland State University campus, giving it a lively, youthful vibe. Its central downtown location puts you within easy reach of Portland's top concert venues, museums, and nightlife. The rooms are simple but spacious, and the 24-hour gym and outdoor pool (open in summer) provide solid amenities for the price.

It's a great home base for concert-goers who want to enjoy Portland without breaking the bank.

Why Concert-goers love it

You'll be less than two miles from major music venues like Providence Park and the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry. The downtown location means easy access to public transit and walkable late-night food options. With check-out at 1:00 AM, you won’t feel rushed the morning after a late show. Rooms are typically quiet, especially given the hotel’s university setting, making it easy to wind down post-concert.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for an affordable stay downtown
  • Solo travelers checking off a bucket-list show
  • Couples making a weekend of it
  • Fans wanting peace and quiet after a loud night out
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who want location without the luxury price tag

Food and Drink Options

The hotel serves a 'Fresh Start Healthy Continental Breakfast' daily—perfect for recharging after a night out. While there’s no on-site restaurant, vending machines are available for late-night snacks, and you're just steps from downtown Portland’s walkable dining scene. Plus, with a coffee maker in every room, you can start your morning on your own schedule.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself doesn’t offer on-site nightlife or live music, you’re a quick ride or walk to some of Portland’s best bars, lounges, and music venues. Whether you're into craft brews, dive bars, or rooftop cocktails, downtown Portland has something for every post-show vibe.

What People Say

Reviews often praise the central location and the hotel’s value for money, especially for downtown Portland. Guests love the spacious rooms and the convenience of having Enterprise Rent-A-Car in the lobby. The outdoor pool and patio are also a hit during summer stays.

Areas for Improvement

The hotel is a little on the basic side—think more function than flair. Some guests mention that the decor is dated, and the parking comes at an extra cost. But for the price and location, most find it a fair trade-off.

The Bottom Line

If you're catching a show in downtown Portland and want a quiet, convenient, and affordable place to crash, University Place Hotel and Conference Center hits all the right notes.

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

David, Rainier, visiting Roseland Theater Mon, 27 April 2015

In general, I wasn't very happy with my stay. Between the breakfast, shower head and the cleaning staff in my room WAY too early it was very disappointing to say the least. If I ever come back to Portland, I will be staying somewhere else!

Disliked: The cleaning staff was in the room cleaning at 9:40 am. I had to ask her to leave - she scared my fiance by just coming in that early. The breakfast was shut down before it was supposed to be. I was there at 5 til and all food was gone already! The shower head was worthless - it didn't even difuse water. It was like not even having a shower head!

Liked: The room
Disliked: The breakfast had no warm food. As in no eggs, bacon, potatoes. It seems they don't have cooks for breakfast. Only cold refrigerated food. There was coffee, bagels, cereal, yogurt, pastries, pancakes (they were not that yummy), cold boiled eggs.

disappointing

Liked: location,staff were friendly.
Disliked: I received an email to do an advanced check in which I did. Then when i got to the hotel I was asked the exact same question I completed on the online check in. I forgot to bring a toothbrush. When I asked at the front desk if they had one I could use they said no they don't do that. This is the first time I have stayed at a hotel that didn't offer such items if a guest forgot theirs. The biggest issue I had was the very uncomfortable mattress. We have stayed at this hotel many times and this was the first time I have had a mattress that was hard and didn't even lay flat (the foot of the bed was higher than the head). We have always been very pleased with this hotel. This is the first time the stay was disappointing. We stayed in Room 253. I did report the mattress problem to the desk staff. Their response was a suggestion that I not stay in that room again!
