Agreeable

Liked: Lovely ambiance, charming staff
Disliked: Our choices for dinner were simply OK rather than anything special. Clearly there was a lot of effort in some of the dishes, wine pairing etc but for us taste fell short.

A pleasant stay but with...

Liked: The building, Staff and location.
Disliked: Cleanliness, house keeping forgot/didn’t clean the room. Tea, water and milk weren’t replenished. Tv reception was very poor hardly any Channels.

Pretty good overall

Liked: The room was comfortable; the breakfasts were good and the staff attentive to a problem we had with an open and rattling window putting it right as soon as we mentioned it. It was also a nice touch to have a fridge in the room. The hotel is located close to Burghley House and is in fact walkable if you're fit and don't mind a 25 minute or so hike across the estate bordering the back of the hotel. Being so close to Burghley does mean the hotel is on the very edge of Stamford so is a good walk into the town which, by the way, is delightful and worth it. The hotel is also very close to the train station and walkable directly from a lane parallel with the track leading onto Wothorpe Road and thence Church Street.
Disliked: The initial response by a very young and obviously inexperienced member of staff, before I'd hardly announced our arrival was 'You're early'. Hardly the way to treat a guest even if it was factually correct! Had she waited for me to complete my sentence I was going to add, after announcing my name, that I was sorry we were early but would they mind storing our luggage until our room was ready. Fortunately someone more senior interceded and we were subsequently treated courteously by all staff. We overlooked the initial 'welcome' on the grounds that we're all young once but I'm still slightly surprised that common courtesy didn't kick in despite the inexperience.
