The Spotlight on The Westgate Hotel

Classic Elegance Just Steps from San Diego’s Music Scene

The Westgate Hotel blends timeless European luxury with a central downtown San Diego location, just blocks from live music, nightlife, and the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter. With sweeping views of the city skyline, hand-crafted furnishings, and plenty of upscale amenities, this hotel offers a refined yet welcoming retreat for music lovers in town for a big show.

Why Concert-goers love it

You’re just a short walk or light rail ride from San Diego’s top music venues—and with the 5th Avenue Light Rail Station only 3 blocks away, late-night transport is a breeze. After the show, unwind in a quiet, well-insulated room, or take a dip in the rooftop heated pool under the stars. Late check-in (from 4:00 PM) makes it easy to settle in after travel, and the 11:00 AM check-out gives you time to sleep in post-gig.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a classy base near the action
  • Solo travelers treating themselves to a special concert weekend
  • Couples combining music with a romantic city escape
  • Fans who want a peaceful, luxurious wind-down after the crowd
  • Budget-conscious fans who don’t mind splurging a little for quality and location

Food and Drink Options

The Westgate Room offers refined Continental-California cuisine for those who want a proper meal before or after a show. On select days, enjoy Afternoon Tea with live harp music—a unique pre-show experience. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the central location puts you within walking distance of dozens of late-night eateries and bars. Bonus: their in-house Plaza Bar serves up classy cocktails with live piano music.

Nightlife Options

The hotel’s Plaza Bar is perfect for a more relaxed nightcap, with live piano setting the mood. For those craving more energy, the Gaslamp Quarter is less than a mile away, packed with bars, lounges, and clubs catering to every vibe. Whether you’re looking for a rock dive or rooftop DJ set, it’s all within reach.

What People Say

Reviewers love the old-world charm and incredible city views. Many highlight the central location and quiet luxury as standout features, especially for concert-goers who want to be close to the action without sacrificing comfort. The rooftop pool and attentive service also earn consistent praise.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that the hotel is a bit more traditional in style—think ornate décor and classical ambiance—so if you’re looking for ultra-modern, minimalist vibes, this might not be it. Also, while the WiFi is free, tech features can feel a bit dated in-room.

The Bottom Line

A refined, centrally located escape perfect for concert-goers who want to pair their live music experience with elegance, comfort, and walkable nightlife.

Very Good - 4.0 out of 5

Sylvia, Edmonton, AB, visiting House of Blues San Diego Thu, 2 October 2014

Liked: Turndown service was especially nice. Very quiet hotel. Could not even hear others in their rooms. The decor may be outdated but it was very clean.
Disliked: Room service food was not enjoyable. Service was excellent but food was not great and it was cold.

Pleasant - 3.0 out of 5

Stephen, Indio, CA, visiting Balboa Theatre Mon, 27 January 2014

The Westgate seems a bit long in the tooth, and could maybe use an update. My wife liked the "frilly" element, while I thought it seemed wildly outdated. Too much so to be considered as a pleasant representation of the charm of a certain bygone era. It was like being at my grandmother's home when I was quite young. All that was missing were the plastic slip covers on the furniture. Also, maybe they could do more to ensure that all services are functional. If you do stay here, be prepared for lots of outside noise.

Liked: The hotel was clean and had a convenient location.
Disliked: The staff were unable to help with a reservation in the hotel restaurant, and didn't offer any alternate suggestions. There was one ATM in the entire hotel, which was out of service. The bed, while not the worst, was not particularly comfortable either.

We enjoyed our one-night stay...

Liked: I chose the Westgate because it was close to the airport and Balboa Park. The staff were very helpful. We arrived early and were able to store our luggage so that we do some sightseeing before checking in. The room had comfortable beds and was attractively decorated. We enjoyed the live music at dinner.

Nice hotel, but I wouldn’t...

Liked: Building, location and decor . Was just way too loud and got woken up by housekeeping at 7:40 AM., to see if we had checked out to start cleaning the room. But I spoke with management.
Disliked: Loud and can hear everything thru the doors and halls.
