The Spotlight on The Merchant City Inn

Stay in the Heart of Glasgow’s Music Scene

Modern yet affordable, The Merchant City Inn is a privately owned 3-star hotel tucked away on a quiet street in Glasgow’s vibrant Merchant City district. Just steps from Argyle Street and a 2-minute walk from George Square, this hotel offers a prime location surrounded by designer boutiques, theatres, bars, and restaurants. With 40 stylishly furnished rooms and easy access to both train and bus stations, it’s a great base for exploring Glasgow’s music and nightlife.

Why Concert-goers love it

This hotel’s central location makes it a perfect choice for music lovers heading to gigs across Glasgow. Whether you’re catching a show at the OVO Hydro, Barrowland Ballroom, or King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, you’re never far away. After the show, return to a quieter street for a peaceful night’s sleep. The 13:30 check-in and 10:30 check-out are fairly standard, but its proximity to late-night transport options makes getting back easy—even after those encores.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends looking to explore Glasgow’s music scene together
- Solo travelers ticking off a dream gig
- Couples making a romantic weekend of it
- Fans who want some quiet after a high-energy show
- Budget-conscious travelers who want class without the price tag

Food and Drink Options

While there’s no on-site restaurant, the hotel is surrounded by countless eateries within walking distance—perfect for post-show bites. Breakfast is available on-site, which is a big plus after a late night. Though there’s no 24/7 room service, the surrounding area offers enough variety to keep you satisfied at any hour.

Nightlife Options

Being in the Merchant City means you’re right by some of Glasgow’s most popular late-night spots. From cozy pubs with local beers to live music venues and cocktail lounges, you’re spoilt for choice. While the hotel itself doesn’t host live music, it’s a short stroll to places that do.

What People Say

Guests love the location—close to shops, venues, and transport. Reviews often mention the value for money and the friendly staff. Many appreciate the quiet street setting despite being in the city center, making it a great place to crash after a buzzing night out.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that the décor is a bit dated and the stairs can be a challenge as there's no lift. A few mention the damage deposit policy being unclear, so it’s worth double-checking before arrival. Still, most agree these are minor issues given the location and price.

The Bottom Line

A budget-friendly base in the heart of Glasgow’s music and nightlife, The Merchant City Inn is ideal for concert-goers looking to stay central without breaking the bank.

Comfortable budget hotel which is very handy for Old Fruitmarket and City Hall. Would certainly use it again.

Liked: Room was exactly as advertised and, in spite of city centre location, double glazing meant it was quiet.

Lovely listed building; no frills room but lived up to expectations. Would be more than happy to book again.

Liked: Clean, comfortable, friendly.
Disliked: Room very gloomy; one bulb out and others very dull.

Very good

Liked: Ideal location in city centre. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean.
Disliked: The price paid for room was high when there was no breakfast included. It was a bit noisy at night with the nightclub across the road. However you would expect this being right in middle of the city centre. Hotel could do with a refurbishment as the decor is outdated. The windows in the rooms need to be upgraded to ones that can be opened easier as we were unable to open the window which made it difficult to sleep.

Passable

Liked: I liked the fact that the beds were really comfy and the room was incredibly quiet. ..
Disliked: I really didn't appreciate the attitude of the person behind the reception who made us pay a cash deposit even though we had booked through bookings. Com.he knew we were there for the Scottish Cup final and probably thought we were hooligans or something even though we were both in our 60's. Or maybe he just supported the other team....
