The Spotlight on The Mad Hatter Hotel

Historic Charm Meets South Bank Buzz

A classic London stay with a quirky twist, The Mad Hatter Hotel sits just steps from the River Thames in the heart of Southwark. Housed in a beautifully preserved 19th-century former hat factory, it blends old-school British charm with modern conveniences like free Wi-Fi and comfortable, well-equipped rooms. With the Tate Modern, Covent Garden, and major music venues all within walking distance, this spot is a smart pick for music lovers wanting to stay central without sacrificing character.

Why Concert-goers love it

The location is hard to beat—just a 5-minute walk from Waterloo Station, so late-night returns after gigs are super easy, even if your show runs late. The surrounding area is lively but not noisy, offering a great balance of nightlife access and peaceful sleep. With flexible check-in from 15:00 and a smooth check-out at 11:00, there’s plenty of time to recover after a high-energy night out.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends who want nearby pubs and a central base
- Solo travelers catching that once-in-a-lifetime show
- Couples looking for a romantic weekend with concert vibes
- Fans who need a quieter space to wind down
- Budget-conscious music lovers who still want a quality stay

Food and Drink Options

The on-site pub is a highlight, serving classic English dishes and hearty pies—the perfect post-show comfort food. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the central location means plenty of late-night dining options are just a walk away. Breakfast is available and worth waking up for, even after a late one.

Nightlife Options

The hotel’s own bar offers a cozy vibe with real ales and homey atmosphere, ideal for pre-concert drinks or a nightcap. You're also just a short stroll from riverside bars, lounges, and buzzing spots around the South Bank and Waterloo.

What People Say

Guests love the historic character of the building, the superb location for sightseeing and events, and the friendly, helpful staff. Many mention the clean, comfortable rooms and the on-site pub as standout features.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note that rooms can feel a bit dated and that there’s no elevator, which might be a consideration for those with mobility concerns. But the charm and character more than make up for it.

The Bottom Line

A cozy, character-filled base in the heart of London—The Mad Hatter Hotel is perfect for concert-goers who want charm, convenience, and comfort all in one place.

Friendly staff; no A/C in...

Liked: Front desk staff were friendly and aimed to please; the woman who checked us into our rooms directed us to delicious + beautiful restaurant nearby, Seabird. Staff in bar was great, really amiable.
Disliked: No Air Conditioning! Lesson learned: old buildings in London probably won't have A/C (duh) but since this was a 3-star hotel + rated 8+ on Booking.com, it didn't occur to me to check for something as basic as A/C... windows only open a few inches so even though fans were provided, it was hard to get any sort of cross-ventilation going in our room (it was better across the hallway, where my parents were staying, so at least they didn't have to sweat it out all night).ALSO, the ladies public restroom in the basement needs attention: out of 2 stalls, only 1 had a functioning light (the other 2 were pitch black) and the one with the light plus one of the dark ones was clogged beyond a basic flush. I told the gent at the front desk who said he was aware, but it didn't seem like anyone was going to fix it anytime soon. Gross.

Liked: Location is great…close to many things. The staff is truly amazing. Sami and Luke make you feel so welcome and happily provide great suggestions for things to do and see. You almost feel like you are home! The pub is exceptional with a lot of choices for drinks and food. Al is a super barkeep and goes above and beyond to provide good service. We found ourselves drinking here most evenings because of the atmosphere. The Mad Hatter is a very special place.
