Disappointing - 2 out of 5

Bransgrove, Essex, visiting Portsmouth Guildhall Mon, 27 April 2015

The hotel in general was nice and friendly, but when going towards the room I noticed how old fashioned and dated everything looked, like it needed updating from the carpet to the walls. In the room it was clean and tidy but everything was a little dated - it was like going back to the 70's. Personally I prefer a nice crisp clean look in the rooms but this definitely wasn't the case. I think this could be a really lovely hotel as the location is perfect but it needs a good refit. Considering what we paid for the room I was expecting more.

Liked: Clean as can be considering how old everything is.
Disliked: Very old fashioned.

Excellent base to explore Portsmouth...

Liked: Room was very clean and comfortable with a good supply of tea. Breakfast was very good and evening meals in the bar good and reasonable value. Location was fantastic only a short walk from the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and IOW ferries.

Exceptional

Liked: Very nice relaxed place. Breakfast very good quality. Room very spacious and exceptionally clean. Massive bathroom with every thing you could need.
Disliked: The only problem we found was the room was very hot and you couldn?t change the setting on the radiators. We had to have the window wide open to cool the room down through the night which was a bit of a waste of heat we thought.

Clean & comfy but no...

Liked: Handy for the ferry and short walk to restaurants at Gunwharf Quays. Comfy bed. Spotlessly clean. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Disliked: Hotel rooms were in the west wing so meant a bit of a maze-like trek to get there. Although we?d paid for breakfast we didn?t eat it because we needed to check in at Brittany Ferries terminal at 07:15 and breakfast starts at 07:00. No exceptions. Pity the hotel doesn?t cater for early morning ferry departures given its connection with the sea! We were given a packed lunch instead.
