Kate, Exeter, visiting O2 Academy Birmingham
I have stayed in many Hotel du Vins over the years and slowly the food and service is going downhill at a couple of the venues. Breakfast both here and in the Exeter hotel was lukewarm with scrambled eggs cold and inedible. Buffet selection average and service average. Such a shame as it used to be excellent and the rooms are amazing.
Liked: The rooms.
Disliked: Breakfast was awful.

Liked: The history of the building and the location
Disliked: Our room was located at the top of the stairs which is the main thoroughfare for other guests to get to their rooms. There was a constant slamming of the main fire door but this was minor the only other thing was not being able to get a hot breakfast served in your room and the only other option was a continental one which did not appear to be appetising

Liked: Beautiful hotel, well priced and in a fantastic location central Birmingham.
Disliked: The hotel didn’t do anything wrong but the noise on the streets of drunk people and boy racers until 4am with super loud cars meant we didn’t get much sleep

Liked: Nice building and staff and food and good location.
Disliked: We have stayed and eaten here numerous times before, but this was the first time that we came away feeling somewhat disappointed. This was firstly due to the aircon not working correctly in the room and so it was really hot all night and we struggled to sleep, it was a hot day and 27c outside but it was so hot in the room that you could feel how much cooler it was opening the door into the corridor to come down stairs. Also we paid for dinner, bed and breakfast for the 3 of us and we asked what we could choose off the menu etc and how it worked and the waiter said that we could choose 2 courses from the menu and that our daughter could choose off either the children's or adult menu, however when we got the bill for the drinks, our daughters food (she chose off the children's menu) was on the bill. We were also told that it was the same for breakfast so be warned if you are booking a family room with a child then you will have to pay for ANY food that they have regardless on what package you are on and isn't how it reads on any of the booking.com wording. Finally the gents toilets on the ground floor were not great, there was black mould spots inside the urinals, and just needed some bleach and a good clean and was not what I expected to see here at all. These things just took the shine off the experience, especially when you are paying over £200 for a hotel for 1 night.

Sadly not the standards and...
Liked: Beds are comfortable. Staff are friendlyRoom was huge but this is also a negative as only has 2 pieces of artwork and no atmosphere.
Disliked: Sadly the hotel is very tired and unloved. Each room is sparse and feels very cold. AC is noisy. Couldn't ever reach the room service so would call reception to be put through to the non answering room service. Finally persuaded receptiont to take my order. The hotel is a far cry from its hay days being the pinacle of great service and relaxed comfortable hotel.

Excellent!
Liked: Gorgeous building, lovely and warm staff, great food, and a very comfortable, spacious room. We were treated as valued guests, and Ben was wonderful. He remembered our anniversary and made sure we experienced a little extra indulgence and luxury on the eve. Would absolutely recommend staying at Hotel Du Vin!
