Pleasant - 3 out of 5

Kate, Exeter, visiting O2 Academy Birmingham Wed, 5 February 2020

I have stayed in many Hotel du Vins over the years and slowly the food and service is going downhill at a couple of the venues. Breakfast both here and in the Exeter hotel was lukewarm with scrambled eggs cold and inedible. Buffet selection average and service average. Such a shame as it used to be excellent and the rooms are amazing.

Liked: The rooms.
Disliked: Breakfast was awful.

Liked: First impressions were positive and checking in was pain-free with friendly and informative reception staff. The room was spacious, the bed was large and comfortable and it was all reasonably clean if a tad dusty. The hotel?s location is central making it very easy to access all the main amenities of Birmingham city centre.
Disliked: Parking. The hotel has no dedicated parking so we were forced to park in an expensive and aging multi-story car park (Snow Hill) recommended by the hotel. This was very inconvenient when transporting heavy luggage. Also, the car park phone booking system did not work and the ticket machine only accepted coins, thus we had to hunt around Birmingham city centre for change. We could only get enough change for 4 hours making it necessary to return to the car to purchase another ticket later that evening. Very, very inconvenient. The Hotel. The du Vin is a rabbit warren of corridors and as the rooms are named and not numbered and the directions to those rooms non-existent it took more than a little time to find our suite as it was impossible to know which way we were heading. The Room. We finally located the room only to find that the swipe card to gain access did not work, necessitating a trip back to reception through the maze of corridors. Once in the room it didn't take long to discover that one of the doors overlooking the courtyard did not open and despite the fact that the weather was mild and very pleasant outside, the room was cold, and it transpired that both the hot air system and the radiator did not work. In addition to this, one of the standard lamps was also not working and the toilet took a lot of coaxing to get it to flush, sometimes failing to do so completely. We could have made our concerns about the room known to reception, however; as we were only there for one night it didn?t seem worth it. On reflection, we should have voiced those concerns in order to benefit future guests staying in that room. Taken in isolation the issues mentioned above may seem trivial and could be overlooked, but when brought together they contributed to an extremely underwhelming stay.In short, the Hotel du Vin Birmingham is a tired, overly priced establishment in need of some serious updating and attention.

Liked: Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Room was clean and bed was comfortable.
Disliked: I payed for a deluxe suite and whenever anyone in the hotel walked past our room, the door would bang as though someone was trying to kick the door in because there was a draft in the corridor. Unfortunately this completely ruined our stay as we didn?t sleep either night. The noise from the outside was really bad too.

Bed is absolute heaven in...

Liked: The hotel is in a good location only 5 mins or so for shopping and car park only 2 mins walk.We stayed in a suite on the 3rd floor, The bed was huge I have never seen a bed so large before, and boy it did not disappoint it was so comfy.
Disliked: The loo didn?t really flush that well, but it was fine so not too much of an issue.
