Exceptional stay in an affordable,...

Liked: I absolutely loved the feel of the hotel. It's so rare to stay in an old building that has been so well-taken care of. We had almost booked an Air Bnb, but as two artists trying for a romantic setting, we just couldn't stand the idea of all the grey and clinical "modern" apartments. I grew up prizing old and historic places, and I like things that feel cozy and lived-in. I loved the tastefully funky updates to the decor and wouldn't have changed a thing. Everything was beautiful and had real character. I adored the simplicity and mellowness of the check-in system, and the fact that we were given a real key. The location was excellent, the bed was comfortable, and the room was quiet. The bathroom was gorgeous vintage tile; the fixtures were old and high-quality-- everything in sparkling-clean condition. The person at the desk- I believe his name was Richard-- was very knowledgeable and polite, with great recommendations on just about everything (including where to find the cheap parking!). We were also right upstairs from Stella Bakery, and it was so delightful that we ended up going twice a day. We also ended up extending our stay because we were having such a great time. An authentic hotel experience, without any tacky updates or needless bells and whistles. Just a quiet, pretty room in a great city. We will be returning soon!
Disliked: Everything was perfect and pleasant! No complaints here. My only disappointment was that the sherry service wasn't operating, I'm guessing, because of covid. Can't blame them!

If you have not stayed...

Liked: It is a very old hotel, that has been maintained as a boutique, small venue that is simply beyond value in what they offer. A smaller complex-with staff that treats you as their long lost friend!
Disliked: Parking is expensive, but it is everywhere in San Francisco.

Name says it all

Liked: This is a favorite place of mine. Quirky, small, hard to find, no elevator...but, this place has character like no other. The pictures and quotes from the beat generation poets, the decor, the area...it is time travel to the late fifties and you are hanging out with Kerouac. You are in the heart of North Beach and you sit in your window and watch the people in the coffee shop across the street. The flow of people going up and down Columbus is fascinating. Maybe not for everyone. But, if you value character, the experience and something unique this may be for you.
Disliked: Parking is tricky the first time. But, once you find the North Beach public garage a block away, you are golden. If you have an issue with stairs, this could be a big factor as you have to carry luggage up a long flight of stairs to get to the hotel.

Very good

Liked: Cute boutique hotel with lots of charm. I really enjoyed my stay there. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Ooh and I love how they leave out complimentary Sherry in the evening for the hotel guests to enjoy. The location was excellent as well. Right in the middle of little Italy. There's plenty of great restaurants, coffee shops and bars you can walk to. I'll definitely be back.
Disliked: Wish there was a little fridge in the room. Mainly because there was no place to put perishable snacks I had bought. Also I prefer drinking cold water in the morning to wake me up. But I get it, it's part of the charm. This wouldn't stop me from coming back here again.
