With free Wi-Fi, a movie lounge, and a spacious outdoor patio, this hostel is a go-to for travelers looking to meet people and explore the city on a budget. Dorm-style rooms with shared bathrooms keep things simple, while perks like towels, linens, and daily housekeeping add comfort.

Why Concert-goers love it

Concert fans love this hostel’s easy subway access—the 103rd Street Station is just two minutes away, getting you to Times Square and major venues in under 20 minutes. After a night out, return to a quiet residential neighborhood that offers a peaceful place to recharge. With late-night events and a social vibe in-house, you don’t even have to leave the property to keep the night going.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends who want a fun, shared space at a great price
  • Solo travelers catching a dream concert and looking to meet new people
  • Couples combining music and sightseeing in NYC
  • Fans needing a calm, affordable spot to unwind after the show

Food and Drink Options

While there’s no on-site restaurant, HI NYC Hostel offers a large communal kitchen perfect for late-night cooking or pre-concert meals. A café on-site serves snacks and beverages, and you’re within walking distance of plenty of casual eateries and corner delis. Guests especially love the flexibility to cook and eat on your own schedule.

Nightlife Options

The hostel hosts its own comedy nights, pub crawls, and variety shows—a great way to keep the energy going after a concert. If you're up for more, bars and lounges along Amsterdam Avenue and nearby Harlem offer a taste of local nightlife within walking distance.

What People Say

Travelers rave about the clean facilities, helpful staff, and vibrant social atmosphere. Many mention how easy it is to meet fellow music lovers and travelers. The location also gets high marks for being both safe and well-connected by public transit.

Areas for Improvement

If you’re expecting hotel-style luxury, this isn’t it. Rooms are dorm-style and bathrooms are shared, so privacy is minimal. Some guests have noted occasional noise from common areas, but earplugs usually do the trick.

Liked: Featuring vending machines, snack bars, and a small coffee shop inside. There are convenience stores, fast food restaurants, pizza places, and more just outside, offering great convenience. It's also just a short walk to the subway station, making trips to downtown quick and easy. The restrooms are plentiful, bright, and clean. During off-peak hours, you can often enjoy having the entire space to yourself. They're well-equipped with tissue paper and hairdryers, and the cleanliness is excellent. The shower stalls are also spacious and comfortable.
Disliked: The bed frames aren’t very sturdy, so movement on one bunk is easily felt on the other.

Liked: • showers have lots of room to dry off and get changed afterwards. wet/dry area separated by a curtain and there is a bench and 3 hooks in every stall• hairdryer in each bathroom• one block away from 2 subway stations, 15 mins from times square on the 1 train• near to target/mcdonalds/cvs/7/11 etc all useful shops like that• lockers are big and have 3 hooks inside• beds are spacious and comfortable• beds have shelf and light• big outdoor area with lots of places to sit including options in the shade• self serve shop in the lobby even with ice cream• nice laundry room with plenty of washers and dryers, 2 large tables to fold/sort etc• full length mirror in room and bathrooms• room doors are soft close• water fountain for drinking and refilling bottles• given 2 nice pillows• plenty of common areas• clean•shower heads had 3 settingsthis hostel is very big and designed well by people who clearly understand hostels/hostel culture. you can tell that the people who run this care about what they do. it was great, thankyou
Disliked: • the room was at times insanely hot. we had air blowing but it didnt reach the front of the room where my bed was, it was in front of the windows• showers dont have a detachable head so bring a shower cap• the towel smelt weird, i got another one but it smelt the same• curtain on the bed doesnt draw all the way, it stops at the ladder. i used my top sheet to fill the gap by tying it to the bed above me.• blanet was just a thin throw, no duvet. this wasnt a problem for me as it was in the 20s when i was there but i think you could get very cold otherwise• at night there was near constant rumbling from upstairs. not sure why or how cus surely it was just another room above us ? but it sounded like furniture being moved around. room 207

Affordable hostel in Manhattan with...

Liked: This hostel as a high value for money being at 10min from central park and 2 min from the subway. Rooms and washrooms are also really comfortable and spacious.Common spaces are big and a very nice patio is accessible. It's possible to buy some things to eat/drink directly in the hostel.
Disliked: The kitchen is very small considering the number of people in the hostel, and it was even worse when it was divided in two due to renovations. There was no personal box like in most hostels, and my food was stolen several times, even with name tags.I had to pay 5 USD to leave my bag in the locker on the checkout day; it was the first time I'd seen that in a hostel!
