The Spotlight on Freehand New York

Creative Vibes Meet Concert Convenience at Freehand New York

Modern and artsy, Freehand New York is a stylish hotel in the historic Flatiron District, set in the former George Washington Hotel. With interiors by Roman and Williams and an artistic partnership with Bard College, the hotel blends NYC's creative edge with upscale comfort. Guests can expect thoughtful details like HD smart TVs, plush bathrobes, and Argan-infused amenities in every room.
Located just steps from the 6 train and within walking distance of Union Square, Midtown, and Madison Square Park, it's a perfect launchpad for a music-filled night out in Manhattan.

Why Concert-goers love it

Freehand New York is just a short walk or subway ride away from some of the city's top music venues, including Madison Square Garden and Irving Plaza. With a midnight-friendly vibe and a lobby that stays buzzing long after encore, it offers the perfect post-show atmosphere. The late check-out at 12:00 pm means you can sleep in after a late night, and the central location makes catching a cab or hopping on the subway a breeze.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a fun, social stay with shared spaces and rooftop bars
  • Solo travelers catching a must-see artist and wanting access to NYC’s culture scene
  • Couples making a long weekend of great shows and city exploring
  • Fans needing a chill space to recharge after loud nights
  • Budget-conscious music lovers wanting boutique style without splurging

Food and Drink Options

Freehand New York is a foodie-friendly spot with five restaurants and bars. The lobby bar and the rooftop Broken Shaker serve up creative cocktails and bites, while The Smile offers convenient grab-and-go options for pre-show snacks. While there's no 24/7 room service, the on-site dining covers most late-night cravings, and breakfast options are available if you’re up before noon.

Nightlife Options

If you're not ready to call it a night after the concert, the on-site Broken Shaker rooftop bar delivers a lively atmosphere with skyline views and a curated cocktail menu. Prefer something low-key? The lobby bar is perfect for a nightcap. Plus, you’re minutes away from NYC’s famed nightlife scenes in Flatiron, NoMad, and the East Village.

What People Say

Guests rave about the hotel’s stylish decor, creative atmosphere, and buzzing rooftop bar. Many love the location for its easy access to concert venues and subway lines. Rooms are described as clean, comfortable, and filled with thoughtful touches like free bottled water and plush amenities. The social vibe, from the artsy lobby to the rooftop, is often highlighted as a plus.

Areas for Improvement

Some reviewers mention smaller-than-expected rooms, which is typical in NYC, and note that the hotel can get lively at night—great if you're staying up, less so if you're trying to sleep early. Also, while there's no on-site gym or spa, the city is your playground.

The Bottom Line

Freehand New York is a stylish, centrally located hotel with a creative vibe and nightlife energy—perfect for concert-goers looking to stay in the rhythm of the city.

Superb

Liked: Rooftop was amazing with great food, cocktails and bartenders. The bunk room is always comfortable and great value for 3-4 people. Coffe and breakfast were solid downstairs and we stayed in Chicago in same type of room two weeks later!

Great location, great shower

Liked: Hard to find a family room at an affordable price in Manhattan so this room fitted our needs almost perfectly. Four bunk beds in one private room with an excellent shower. Appreciated the television but with the room being on the small side (Manhattan, of course) it wasn't totally comfortable for relaxing. Appreciated the rooftop bar and the free bottle of water on checking in as well.Great location and did I mention how good the shower was?
Disliked: Small room but expected that with it being Manhattan. It was a little inconvenient that most of the power points weren't working - we didn't mention it to staff (perhaps we should have) but it felt like it would have been a big job to sort.

An Old Hotel with a...

Liked: The King size bed rooms on the 14th and 15th floors are quiet and, while compact, comfortably sized. They are well equipped with a small fridge, a nice AM/FM radio, large flat screen TV and a somewhat cramped but very adequate bathroom with spacious shower and decent linens. There's also a good size closet with a pair of Terry cloth robes, hair dryers and an easy to use safe for valuables. Climate control works well.
Disliked: The elevators are small and slow.

Passable

Liked: Location was good.
Disliked: The room was hardly a "Premier Queen." It was much smaller than advertised and was more akin to a traditional NY hotel room than what I expected. It was a huge let-down since it was an anniversary stay. When I called the front desk, they confirmed it was a premier queen, and some rooms did have the queen bed against the wall. The carpet was also gross to the touch and moist due to humidity, and there was no fan in the bathroom. The shower curtain was also dialing it in, as it didn't even reach all the way across.

Good

Liked: Our room was a nice size. And we had two windows to the streets of NYC. Reasonably priced.
Disliked: The bed was a bit lumpy (needs to be replaced) and the sink is really too small to use for anything beyond hand washing.

There’s better value for service...

Liked: Beds were great. Size of room commensurate w NY rooms for this price. I paid $260 a night all in.
Disliked: AVOID rooms with in window air conditioning units. They’re loud and there’s noise leakage from the sealing (duct tape)…Night manager Omar was confrontational.
