Good first impression but proved...

Liked: Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Room was lovely. Rather cold but we managed to get the heating on. Room very spaceous and very comfortable bed.Dinner: Nice veg, lovely mash and delicious sauce/gravy.
Disliked: Dinner: the belly pork was tough (had to ask for steak knives) and looked as if it had come out of a pre-packed or frozen meal. The skin was soggy and rubbery, not crackling, as it should have been.Breakfast: The hot breakfast components looked sad and unappetising. The scrambled egg was disgusting, watery with overcooked lumps in it and orange lumps which looked like apricots; on closer inspection proved to be whole egg yolks which had not been whisked in. I was offered a fried egg which I imagined would be freshly cooked but it was presented immediately so had obviously been lurking under a heater of some sort. The yolk 'cracked' when I touched it. That, also, was inedible. The orange juice was bitter with a chemical taste, obviously not fresh juice. The worst hotel brakfast I have ever had.The toilet paper in the room must be the thinnest, cheapest on the market. And no spare one!!I forgot to unplug and pack my iphone charging cable, on leaving. When I phoned next day to ask if it could be sent to me, I was promised a return phone call but nobody called. The same happened when I phoned again the following day. I have heard nothing. I don't just think I left it, I know I did, therefore it seems someone has taken it. This has left a blight over the experience.

Liked: I've been coming to Formby Hall for a long time. My sister was married here and we've had spa days in the past. So this is a great location for us visiting family. Beautiful views, beautiful outside space to sit to relax and look at the ducks (we were in a corner ground floor suite so we had lots of space). I was traveling with my teenage daughter and niece, so having a room that gives us plenty of beds was important (we had two single sofa beds and a King bed). The evening Restaurant food and staff were great. Spa treatments were lovely.
Disliked: There was a feeling of things being a little run down for a four star hotal. A bit tired. My biggest niggles were:1. The room didn't have a telephone to call for room service (we had to call reception from our own phone). 2. The breakfast was not the best. Dried up scrambled eggs and the coffee was awful. They need a coffee machine upgrade! 3. The hot tub in the swimming pool area was missing a lot of its tiles. For a hotel that has 'spa' in the name should really improve on this. Plus. It was tiny. I live in California, so maybe I'm just used to bigger things but this certainly felt like the tiniest hot tub I've ever been in. Plus cracked/torn loungers. 4. The gym was closed during our stay. Yes, this was my own fault for not checking in the weeks before I traveled (I booked six months before travel, so this wasn't happening when I booked) but we chose this hotel over another hotel because of the gym. I think an email to residents who would be staying during that time would have been the correct thing to do - I would have cancelled and moved to another hotel. It was a key part of our trip, to workout daily. They did put on extra workout classes in their studio and offered us to workout there when classes weren't taking place but that never worked out for us.

Disliked: You had to pay for drinks in the spa mist spas have complementary drinks if you book a treatment. 1 staff member at reception seemed a little put out and off while we weee trying to get something clarified. Some areas looked a little tired and in need of TLC
