Disappointing - 2 out of 5

Robert T, Gateshead, visiting Scala London Fri, 17 June 2016

The bed was sooooooo squeaky I couldn't sleep for fear of waking up the next room, as every slight movement made this bed creak and squeak. Also, very small bathroom for the price. The room could have been more modern, but you pay for the close location to the train station and underground.

Liked: Location; front desk was friendly.
Disliked: The bed.

Passable

Liked: A couple of minutes walking from King's Cross railway station and the Underground. Plenty of shops around the area.
Disliked: This information is for potential customers. Remember, this is a 2 stars hotel. - We didn't find the towels in our bathroom - Skirting boards full of dust - Breakfast room too small for all the guests, not enough space to move around - We paid 90 pounds but too expensive for what on offer

Friendly, very good value in...

Liked: I have stayed in Elmwood several times before. It is one of the many 'boutique' style hotels in the area: Belgrove Street, Argyle Square, Crestfield Street, Argyle Street. The big advantages are location and price. It's only a short step to Euston station, and an even shorter step to Kings Cross St Pancras, so very convenient for train travellers. Although Argyle Square is just off the very busy Euston Road, it's quiet and secluded, looking over a garden square and games pitch. These hotels are two and three star (Elmwood is 2 star), so do not expect the amenities of a four-star hotel. Some rooms can be very small. Mine looked straight onto a brick wall. But I don't come to London to sit in a hotel room staring out the window, and neither, I suppose, do you. I found all the staff very pleasant. Breakfast affords a fairly limited selection - boiled or scrambled eggs, toast, cereals, juice, tea, coffee, sliced cold meat, cheese slices. It's all very good value for money in such a convenient location. For a higher degree of comfort, you would have to pay a great deal more. My room was nice and warm, snug, on very cold rainy stormy February evenings. The shower worked well, with good water pressure and temperature control, and a shower tray that drained properly.
Disliked: The bedspread was fairly 'tired', with the embroidered pattern worn almost off in the area where people (including me) sit, there being no chair in the room (just a stool with a wobbly leg).. These traditional properties don't have lifts, so if you have a lot of luggage and impaired mobility, it may be a struggle to get to the top floor up the narrow stairs.
