The Spotlight on Carlton Arms Hotel

Creative Vibes and Concert Nights in the Heart of Manhattan

Located just steps from Madison Square Park and close to major subway lines, the Carlton Arms Hotel is a quirky, art-filled retreat in the middle of New York City's bustle. Housed in a historic five-story walk-up, this hotel is more than just a place to sleep — it’s a living art gallery. Each room and hallway is uniquely decorated by local and traveling artists, giving the space an eclectic, expressive personality. With free WiFi and a 24-hour front desk, it’s a convenient and affordable option for those looking to stay somewhere with soul.

Why Concert-goers love it

You’ll be just a short walk from Gramercy Theater and close to subway lines that can take you to venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn. Whether you're catching a late-night show or heading to an after-hours event, the location makes getting around a breeze. The hotel’s laid-back, artsy vibe is perfect for unwinding after a loud night out, and the flexible 2:30 PM check-in means you won’t be rushed before the show.

Who this Hotel is great for

Groups of friends who want a budget-friendly, fun base
Solo travelers catching a dream show in NYC
Couples making a creative weekend out of it
Fans who prefer a quiet, artistic space post-show
Budget-conscious music lovers seeking character without the cost

Food and Drink Options

While there’s no on-site restaurant, you’re surrounded by walkable dining spots from late-night pizza joints to cozy brunch cafes. There’s no room service, but the neighborhood makes up for it with endless food options. You can easily grab a bite after a midnight encore or nurse a hangover with a solid breakfast the next morning.

Nightlife Options

The hotel isn’t a party hub, but that’s part of its charm. Step outside and you’re in one of NYC’s most vibrant neighborhoods, with bars, lounges, and live music venues like Gramercy Theater only minutes away. It’s easy to hop on the subway for downtown clubs or keep things low-key with a drink nearby.

What People Say

Guests love the hotel’s artsy atmosphere, calling it “one-of-a-kind,” “inspiring,” and “a hidden gem.” Many reviewers mention the great location and friendly staff, while others appreciate the hotel’s affordable rates in an otherwise pricey city. It’s not luxury, but it’s full of character and ideal for creative souls.

Areas for Improvement

It’s a walk-up building with no elevator, so pack light if stairs aren't your thing. Some rooms have shared bathrooms, which might not be for everyone. The artistic décor can be bold — so if you’re after beige walls and business vibes, this isn’t your spot.

The Bottom Line

The Carlton Arms Hotel is a budget-friendly, art-filled haven for concert-goers who want to stay close to the action while soaking up NYC’s creative energy.

Unconventional and strange but safe...

Liked: I enjoyed my stay the room was clean, the bed was way more comfortable than I imagined, the shared bathroom was fine, the staff was friendly and helpful, Teegan is a gem! If you can handle wacky and unconventional you'll be fine. I wish I could have stayed longer. The other fellow guests seemed cool, and it would have been nice to stay a few days, have a drink in the bar downstairs and get to know who I was sharing a bathroom with! I felt safe there. And before I got there I was able to email with the staff and ask questions. I recommend if you want a room that has calm or uplifting art on the walls, ask for that when you book. I stayed in 14B and it was lovely. I slept well and that's what matters.
Disliked: The art was a bit scarier than I anticipated, it felt a bit threatening at first, so you have to be prepared for that! there were some rooms that I could never stay in. The place in general feels a bit dark and grim, more so than the photos reveal, but very clean. I had to sit with all the weird art and get used to it. But I DID get used to it and began to even enjoy some of it! Some people LOVE that look, so it's just a matter of taste. Took me back to a bar I used to hang out in in my art school days in the 90s. And although the beds and sheets were super clean, they do use scented laundry products so I had to sleep in my sleeping bag because I have allergies to scented products. Maybe they will change that.
