When “Lifestyle” Meets Reality ...
Liked: The PositivesLet’s start with what the hotel gets right. The location is unbeatable — tucked neatly between 5th and 6th Avenue, a five-minute stroll from the Flatiron District. And the lobby? Straight out of a Prohibition-era daydream: moody lighting, a touch of speakeasy romance, and that curated “New York as you imagined it” vibe. An entrance that sets the bar high.
Disliked: The RestThe rooms tell a different story. Dimly lit — not mood lighting, but the kind that makes you wonder if the bulbs have joined a union — and with no view to speak of, unless brick walls inspire you. Décor, carpets, walls, bathrooms — all patiently awaiting the renovation that never came. The air conditioning hums with the determination of a long-haul flight in economy class. Immersive? Certainly. Relaxing? Less so. Soundproofing is absent between rooms and corridors, and only marginally better with the street — some noises do fade after the 4 a.m. garbage run. Some rooms are meant to feature folk guitars. Ours did not. When one eventually arrived, it was unplayable — its neck so poorly set it could have doubled as archery equipment. A pity; the idea was charming. In the lobby, the AC blows with such conviction you’ll need a sweater — and possibly a windbreaker — to last more than 15 minutes.Check-out was handled by a young man whose blend of detachment and inefficiency left us wondering if we’d stumbled into an experimental theatre piece rather than a standard departure process.ConclusionIn the end, it felt like a time warp — the promise of a laid-back, neighborhood-style “lifestyle” hotel in the heart of Manhattan, set against the reality of rooms that belong to another era. At $350 per night, this was not a matter of “isolated oversights” or “unmet expectations.” It felt less like oversight and more like policy.

Functional but not fun
Liked: Location, spacious room with 2 large beds, restaurants in the building (coffee, bagels, French food etc)
Disliked: Room felt old. Bathroom is small. Small bathtub with smelly shower curtain (not glass shower enclosure)

Comfy room in a good...
Liked: Really nice room. Had natural light. Once I worked out how to use the shower it was piping hot. Nice complimentary soap. Very kind and friendly staff on the reception desk. Very helpful. One actually wrote out how to get to the Guggenheim for me. This was my first contact with New Yorkers (after the airport) and it was so nice to have such friendly people willing to help. Easy to leave luggage there on last day before moving out. Good location ie nice area. Felt completely safe. Good coffee just round the corner at Black Seed bagel. Given that NY is notoriously expensive I felt I got value for money with my room and the customer service.
Disliked: Teabags were not complimentary. $3 US for one tea bag!! Was a bit of a surprise as am really used to free teabags as I travel a lot.Bar and lounge area downstairs were very dark. Like very dark. Probably would have spent more time there and spent more money there if it had been a bit lighter.
