About The Berghoff Restaurant
The Spotlight on The Berghoff Restaurant

Historic German Dining in the Heart of Downtown Chicago

Located just a short walk from many of Chicago’s top concert venues, The Berghoff Restaurant is a beloved institution serving up traditional German-American fare in a warm, old-world setting. Established in 1898, this landmark spot pairs rich heritage with hearty dishes like schnitzel, bratwurst, and house-brewed beers. With its wood-paneled walls, stained glass windows, and vintage charm, it’s a cozy escape from the downtown bustle, perfect for fueling up before a night of music.

Why Concert-goers love it

Conveniently located near major theaters and music venues, The Berghoff is an easy stop for a pre-concert meal. The service is efficient and friendly, making it a reliable choice when you're on a schedule. The dining room is lively but not overwhelming, so you can still chat with your group or enjoy a solo bite without shouting. Plus, the menu is solidly filling—ideal for keeping hunger at bay through a long setlist.

Who this Restaurant is great for

  • Groups of friends sharing sausages and steins
  • Solo travelers enjoying a quick, hearty dinner at the bar
  • Couples soaking up Chicago charm before a romantic show
  • Fans looking for a high-energy, classic Chicago vibe
  • Budget-conscious music lovers wanting good portions at fair prices

What People Say

Reviewers love the restaurant’s historic ambiance and consistently praise the authentic German food. Favorites include the potato pancakes, schnitzels, and the house root beer. Many mention how easy it is to get seated even during peak times, and the attentive staff knows how to keep things moving—great for guests with pre-show plans. The in-house bakery and bar also earn rave reviews for quality and comfort.

Areas for Improvement

The menu leans heavily toward traditional fare, which may not appeal to more adventurous or plant-based eaters. It can get a bit touristy at peak hours, and the classic decor, while charming, might feel a bit dated to some. But for those who appreciate history with their meal, it’s all part of the experience.

The Bottom Line

If you're headed to a concert downtown and want a reliable, satisfying meal with a side of Chicago history, The Berghoff Restaurant delivers every time.

We had heard many good things about this restaurant and it lived up to it's reputation. Our meals were so good, we plan to go back on our next trip to Chicago.

Liked: Staff, meals, beer and the rootbeer. We also love it's history.
