About Penn Brewery
The Spotlight on Penn Brewery

Classic German Beer Hall Vibes Just Minutes from the Music

Set in a restored 19th-century brewhouse on Pittsburgh’s North Side, Penn Brewery blends old-world charm with a casual, welcoming vibe. It’s known for hearty, traditional German cuisine and award-winning house-brewed beers, served up in a space that feels equal parts beer hall and neighborhood hangout. Just a short hop from downtown’s biggest concert venues, it’s a favorite for pre-show fuel-ups and post-concert pints.

Why Concert-goers love it

Concert-goers appreciate Penn Brewery’s proximity to major venues like Stage AE and PPG Paints Arena—making it easy to grab dinner and drinks without stressing over timing. The casual atmosphere is perfect for getting into the show spirit, and the quick, attentive service means you won’t miss a beat. In warmer months, the large outdoor biergarten offers a lively pre-show hangout with room for groups and a buzz of energy.

Who this Restaurant is great for

  • Groups of friends looking to share a pretzel and a flight of house beers
  • Solo travelers wanting a relaxed, social scene before the show
  • Couples making a fun weekend of it with cozy indoor seating
  • Fans looking for a festive, energetic spot to get hyped
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who want filling food and great beer at fair prices

What People Say

Reviewers rave about the authentic schnitzels, sausages, and pierogies, with many noting the food is “as good as what they had in Germany.” The beer selection is a standout, especially for craft brew lovers. Guests also love the historic setting—think exposed brick, wood beams, and copper brewing tanks. Service is frequently described as “friendly and fast,” especially appreciated before a show.

Areas for Improvement

While most diners love the lively atmosphere, those seeking a quiet meal may find it a bit boisterous during peak hours. Parking can sometimes be tricky on busy nights, so arriving a bit early is a good idea. A few guests mention that the menu leans heavy, so it’s perfect if you’re hungry, but maybe not ideal if you’re after something light.

The Bottom Line

For hearty eats, craft brews, and a fun, pre-show vibe just minutes from Pittsburgh’s top concert venues, Penn Brewery hits all the right notes.

l Food and beer at the airport location were not good. Cider was $11 a glass. Plus they rip you off with a credit card fee. When I see those junk fees they get deducted right off the tip so no sweat...
