About Chez Josephine
The Spotlight on Chez Josephine

Step Back in Time at This Theatrical French Bistro

Just steps from the bright lights of Broadway and some of New York City’s most iconic music venues, Chez Josephine is a charming, vintage-style French restaurant that channels the spirit of 1920s Paris. Located on bustling West 42nd Street, this cozy bistro offers a romantic and lively escape from the city’s hectic pace, with rich red interiors, chandeliers, and a baby grand piano that sets the tone for an unforgettable meal.

Named in tribute to entertainer and activist Josephine Baker, the restaurant is owned by her adopted son Jean-Claude Baker and is as much a tribute to her legacy as it is a destination for excellent French cuisine.

Why Concert-goers love it

Chez Josephine is a hit with concert-lovers thanks to its proximity to Midtown theaters and music venues, including those around Times Square. The atmosphere is lively but never too loud, making it perfect for pre-show conversation. With efficient service and a menu that caters to both full dinners and light bites, it’s easy to fit in a meal before the show. The live piano music adds extra flair without overwhelming the experience.

Who this Restaurant is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a unique pre-show hangout
  • Solo travelers who want to dine somewhere with character
  • Couples enjoying a romantic night out with a touch of vintage glam
  • Fans seeking a festive, theatrical atmosphere before a show
  • Budget-conscious music fans who still want a classy experience (prix fixe options available)

What People Say

Diners rave about the old-world charm and the feeling of being transported to a Parisian cabaret. Reviews frequently mention the friendly staff, delicious French classics like coq au vin and escargot, and the live piano music that keeps the mood upbeat. Many note it as their go-to spot before a Broadway show or concert, praising its consistency and ambiance.

Areas for Improvement

Some visitors found the decor a bit over-the-top or “too theatrical” for their taste. Others mentioned that it can feel cramped during peak hours, especially on weekends. While prices are fair for the area, a few guests noted that drinks can be on the pricier side.

The Bottom Line

If you're headed to a show nearby and want a pre-concert meal that’s as memorable as the music, Chez Josephine hits all the right notes.

Elliott, New York Sun, 18 June 2023

Warm atmosphere and friendly staff. But the service was mediocre and the food was just OK. But it’s a very convenient place for pre-theater.

Liked: Ambience and music.
Disliked: Service was very sketchy.
