About Butcher & Singer
The Spotlight on Butcher & Singer

Old-Hollywood Glamour with a Juicy Side of Steak

Butcher & Singer is a throwback to the golden age of steakhouses, blending 1940s supper club elegance with modern culinary flair. Located on Walnut Street in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, it’s just a short walk or quick ride from many of the city’s major concert venues. With its dark wood interiors, plush booths, and vintage chandeliers, this is a spot that delivers both drama and decadence—on and off the plate.

The menu focuses on classic steakhouse fare with a refined touch, featuring perfectly charred cuts of beef, fresh seafood, and rich sides like truffle mac and cheese. The dress code is smart casual, making it ideal for concert-goers who want to elevate their evening without overdoing it.

Why Concert-goers love it

Its central location makes Butcher & Singer an easy stop before or after a show. Despite its upscale vibe, the atmosphere stays relaxed—perfect for grabbing a hearty meal without feeling rushed. Guests often note the efficient service, which can help you stay on schedule for curtain call. The warm, buzzing ambiance sets the tone for a memorable night out, and the bar is a great place to sip a cocktail before heading to the venue.

Who this Restaurant is great for

  • Groups of friends looking to share steaks and stories before the show
  • Solo travelers soaking in Philadelphia’s music scene with a stellar dinner beforehand
  • Couples seeking a romantic, candle-lit meal before a big event
  • Fans wanting a stylish spot to build the pre-show excitement
  • Budget-conscious music fans celebrating a special night (though note: this is more of a splurge-worthy spot)

What People Say

Diners rave about the succulent steaks, attentive service, and the restaurant’s unique retro charm. Many highlight the bone-in ribeye and the lobster mac and cheese as must-tries. Guests on OpenTable and TripAdvisor consistently mention the “movie set-like ambiance” and describe it as a perfect way to “feel like a star before heading to see one.”

Areas for Improvement

This isn’t the fastest or cheapest meal in town—so if you’re in a rush or on a tight budget, you might want to plan accordingly. Also, while the dim lighting adds to the ambiance, it can be a bit too dark for some guests’ liking.

The Bottom Line

If you're looking to kick off your concert night with elegance, flavor, and a touch of old-school glam, Butcher & Singer delivers a standout steakhouse experience just minutes from Philly’s top music venues.

Service was excellent. Would definitely go again.

Disliked: Fillets were dry. After I asked for some au jus, they didn't have that, but instead brought out a scrumptious sauce made with mushrooms and red wine. Improved the steak immensely. My steak was medium, plenty of red and not overcooked.

l The seating was abysmal. The oysters were not cold and poorly shucked. Steak over salted sides not cold and salad just ok. Tried to upsell some goofy Wagyu that had citrus notes. A complete waste...

l The best martini spot in Philadelphia. Hands down. There's simply no better place to belly up to the bar and have a few martinis at happy hour!

l This meal will be my last at a Starr establishment. The Starr blueprint over-relies on beautiful spaces serving good food and outrageous-for-what you-get prices. At these prices the food need to be...
