Blackfriars Restaurant is a unique and atmospheric dining spot tucked away in Newcastle's city centre. Housed in a 13th-century former friary, it offers a truly authentic British experience with locally-sourced ingredients and a medieval ambience. Just a short walk from major music venues, this award-winning restaurant blends old-world charm with modern culinary flair.
Blackfriars is ideally located for grabbing a pre-show meal or relaxing with a post-concert drink. Its central location means you're never far from the action, yet the stone walls and candlelit setting provide a peaceful refuge from the city's buzz. The service is known to be efficient and friendly, making it easy to dine without worrying about missing the opening act. They also offer set menus and early evening specials, perfect for fitting dinner into your concert schedule.
Reviewers consistently praise the high-quality traditional British dishes and the restaurant’s unique medieval setting. Many mention the excellent value of the set menus and the attentiveness of the staff. Diners also appreciate the quiet atmosphere, making it a great place to chat and unwind before a gig. The local ingredients and seasonal menus get frequent nods, as does the charming outdoor seating area in warmer months.
Some guests note that the medieval decor, while authentic, can feel a bit dim for those who prefer a brighter dining space. It’s also a popular spot for special occasions, so booking ahead is recommended—especially on concert nights when it can fill up quickly.
If you're heading to a show and want a meal with character, quality, and convenience, Blackfriars delivers a truly memorable British dining experience just minutes from Newcastle’s top venues.

We were going onwards to the theatre, so decided to have just a mains course. The food was amazing and delicious, but not enough of it.
Liked: Everything else was fantastic.
