Hotel Description
Dating back to the 16th century this former traveler's inn rests in the heart of the picturesque and historic Lewes. The White Hart Hotel offers modern facilities and has an old-world charm. Rich with history the hotel is known as the cradle of American Independence where Thomas Paine forged his radical policies in the debating club of the old inn. His pamphlet 'Common Sense' sold half a million copies in 1776 and inspired the Declaration of Independence signed later that year. Wood paneling oak beams and open fireplaces all create a welcoming atmosphere. The White Hart Hotel has been substantially developed to offer a recreation club as well as a restaurant and lounges for guests and locals.

Disappointing experience of a hotel...

Liked: Staff were helpful and courteous.Central location obviously very good.Potential for this hotel is excellent - it needs to be taken up.
Disliked: One hates being negative, but..Overall impression is of a desperate need for a comprehensive makeover.Room was not up to scratch - dirty and careworn.Bathroom in poor condition. Shower failed during my stay.Hotel is obviously a landmark and of historical importance. Unfortunately this alone will not ensure its future.

The experience was so abysmal...

Disliked: The room was ice cold when we arrived and we were told that the heating wasn't switched on yet (on 30 October!). The staff then put an electric heater in the room while we were out which saw us come back to a sauna. Water pressure in the shower (on second floor) was barely a trickle, and the hot water ran out completely when the second person tried to have a shower. All but one power outlets in the room didn't work, and one had actually been pulled out of the wall and was hanging down by the wires! Towels and bed linen didn't look very clean and were smelly. Some of the food at the breakfast buffet was inedible - half-fermented tinned fruit and brick-solid crumpets for example. The water jug had a dead fly floating in it..

For one night, my stay...

Liked: Breakfast was fine. I selected from what was available. I had to get help from my friend to pour coffee as I couldn’t manage it myself. The history is interesting.Staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Disliked: The bedroom was cold, otherwise acceptable for the price.
