Convenient for being NYC
Liked: We spent 3 nights (wed-sat). I don?t know how it looks like during busy days like weekend but It was pretty easy to use the bathrooms, they were pretty much empty. Specially late at night after we came back from a long day in the city. Bathrooms were clean and the women bathrooms were locked with a code which I liked. We were on floor 10th and I?m glad to say it was not noisy. The AC worked fine. Bed was comfy enough. I would recommend to bring a pillow if you?re picky with that because our pillows were super flat. The bedroom was clean and they gave us towels and soap bars. The cleaning service changed the towels every day. The attention from the people at front desk was polite. The area is awesome, everything is close by and it?s safe. The subway station 3 blocks away is super convenient. It takes you from north to south. Also Central Park is right at the corner and is wonderful. Go grab a cup of coffee and go explore Central Park to start your day. I?m happy with my experience at West Side YMCA. I would recommend it for a low budget trip in NYC. I can?t complain.

My stay was okay mainly...
Liked: It is very well located. Room is basically plain but okay but the mattress no so comfortable. The horizontal blind on the window didn't work properly.
Disliked: Marihuana and smoking smell on the hallway. It need a little more privacy on the shower. No one went to pick the garbabe from the room while I was staying.

Uncomfortable. Reasonable rate for the...
Liked: Check in --friendly accommodating staff person at the desk then.
Disliked: I'm having to give this a not great rating, mainly because the facilities fell rather woefully short. Many have commented about the great location--and it is indeed convenient for central park, lincoln center and the museums. However, the restaurants in the area are of the expensive kind--so considerably more money spent here on food than when staying elsewhere in Manhattan. As for the lodging itself: The tiny rooms were made smaller and uncomfortable by poorly placed/thought out furniture--e.g. no bedside lamps, so that a difficult night's sleep was made even more difficult by not being able to turn on a light to read without disturbing my spouse. The air conditioning unit was super loud. The uncomfortable rooms would have been more tolerable if there had been a nice communal / lounge area open to escape to for fresh air and coffee, etc--the way these often are available at hostels. Alas, of course, the COVID situation meant that any communal areas that might have been available to residents at some point were closed. I was told they'd be opened again at some point. With that, I might have given the Y a better rating. Also a bit vexing: We were required to spend $10 a day per person extra to pay for access to the Y's exercise facilities (obligatory expense) Wouldn't have minded that so much, except for the fact that we were given zero information about how we might actually go about getting into the gyms, and frankly the staff on site were always busy enough that we were put off asking. My family and I (4 people total) will look elsewhere for lodging next time we're in NYC. In 2019 we shared a double room in Chelsea that ended up cheaper for us and frankly more pleasant. The one positive thing about our stay at the Y: Our money went to the Y rather than to a large hotel corporation. That may be the only reason I'd ever consider staying here again in the future--unless maybe they open the lounges/communal areas.
