A stay made disappointing by...

Liked: We came to The Village for the first time in high expectation, having seen the website. It had an added attraction in that many of our group went to school on the site a long time before its conversion to a hotelThe staff were generally brilliant. They coped with uncertainty about numbers of our group arriving/staying/dining really well. They were always helpful, polite and smiling when approached. They were helpful about bus routes into Stockport. One of the waitresses came to our aide when our group, using a separate part of the dining room (conservatory), were overlooked for food orders until late into the evening. She left her station and took our food orders, making sure we had everything we needed. Her action changed the whole tone of this review! The bedroom was large (a Club Room) and the shower wonderful. There was no messing and guessing with levers and taps with wet hands to make the showers work because there were clear on/off buttons for the hand-held shower and the large 'rainforest' shower above. There was a long shelf above the hand basin so plenty of room to store washbags and contents. The bed was large and very comfortable and I had a good supply of tea bags, coffee sachets and milk pods, topped up by the housekeeping staff on request. The heater/electric radiator was very effective in changing the temperature quite quickly in the cool mornings and evenings. The food in the bar was ok and so was the wine selection.
Disliked: In my large room (402) the layout was such that comfortable seating could only be sited in the dark, short corridor area next to the shower. That seating was a three-seater vinyl covered bench of the kind you might see in a bus station or airport lounge. I only ever used it to put on my socks and store the spare pillows I didn't need.We didn't have a glass in the bathroom for a quick drink of water. There were several lamps in the room but all were very low voltage and the overall effect was more 'gloomy' than 'subdued''. (except for the bathroom which was well lit)There was nowhere in the bathroom to put wet towels until they dried - no towel rail. The only heater was on the window wall, next to the long dressing table. There was no guidance in the room about the facilities, other than a QR code reader inviting me to 'contact the team about anything'. That became more irritating as the stay progressed. The TV had options for channels and instantly invited me to ''press the Sky button'' but there wasn't one, just a standard tv controller. The main dining area was a pub-style with tables of four in a very noisy atmosphere next to the bar. As a group of eight we needed somewhere to talk together and the conservatory, alongside the bar, was made available. The delay in taking our food order until 9pm meant that it became cold as the evening went on and there didn't appear to be any heating. It also took a long time before staff realised that we needed the lights on too. The food was generally ok but didn't seem to be prepared on the premises so when I asked for another vegetable to go with the salmon dish on the menu, served with mash and broccoli, I didn't get one. Sadly, the menu didn't include side orders of veg, apart from Battered Onion Rings. We didn't get a chance to try the gymn or pool. Too busy talking.
