The Spotlight on University Club of San Francisco

Classic Charm in the Heart of San Francisco

A refined and traditional stay awaits at the University Club of San Francisco, nestled in the prestigious Nob Hill neighborhood. Just minutes from downtown and iconic concert venues, this private club-turned-hotel blends historic charm with modern comforts. With elegant rooms, onsite dining, and a peaceful atmosphere, it's a great base for music lovers looking to explore the city.

Why Concert-goers love it

Located within a short ride or walk of San Francisco’s biggest event spaces, the University Club offers a quieter retreat after a night of music and excitement. The 12:00 PM check-out gives you time to sleep in after a late show, and the peaceful Nob Hill setting means no noisy traffic or party crowds disturbing your recovery. Public transport is easily accessible from Powell Street, and the hotel’s classic ambiance makes it a unique alternative to busier downtown high-rises.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends who want a cultured base close to the action
  • Solo travelers attending a must-see concert and craving comfort
  • Couples making a romantic weekend out of their music experience
  • Fans wanting a quieter post-concert recovery space in a historic building
  • Budget-conscious music fans looking for style without the chaos

Food and Drink Options

The University Club features a formal dining room serving lunch and dinner, perfect for a more upscale pre-show meal. The hotel bar offers a casual menu and a well-curated wine selection—great for a relaxed recap after the encore. While there’s no 24/7 room service or late-night menu, nearby eateries on Nob Hill and downtown are walkable and offer plenty of post-show bites. Coffee machines in every room help with that morning-after rally.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself doesn’t have live music, you’re a quick streetcar or Uber ride away from San Francisco’s top venues and nightlife hubs. From classic jazz spots to indie bars and lounges, the city’s vibrant music scene is right at your fingertips. When you're ready to wind down, the cozy hotel bar offers a low-key setting with local wines and a quiet vibe.

What People Say

Guests love the historic charm and peaceful atmosphere of the University Club. The friendly staff, beautiful interior, and elegant common spaces like the library and squash courts stand out. Many reviewers say it's a great spot to escape the bustle while still being central. The location scores high for walkability and access to attractions.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests note the absence of air conditioning, which can be a drawback during rare hot spells. Others mention the club’s more formal tone, which may not suit those looking for a party-centric stay. The historic building also means smaller room sizes compared to modern hotels.

The Bottom Line

With its central yet serene location, old-world elegance, and easy access to San Francisco’s concert venues, the University Club of San Francisco is a classy, quiet choice for music fans seeking a restful stay.

Exceptional

Liked: Breakfast was OK although the slices of bread were rather thick for my liking; the coffee cups and dishes were rather small so would have preferred a larger size for my drink and space to put more than one item of food upon. One big problem - there were no napkins of any sort available; very odd for the UC not to provide them for a meal.
Disliked: As above: no napkins.

A very pleasant experience with...

Liked: I loved how old-school it was. The room was clean and comfortable - I recently stayed at one of the other large, famous Nob Hill hotels and the University Club room was very similar. The restaurant was a good experience too; the wait staff was excellent. In and out was tremendously easy. Overall, this was a good experience and excellent value.
Disliked: The building’s fine points (e.g., carpeting) are a little tired and could be refreshed, but I wouldn’t want to change the character of this beautifully traditional building.

Delightful!

Liked: Historic property with a superb location for our weekend in SF. Our room was a suite which was very comfortable and even had a view of the Transamerica Pyramid.
Disliked: No refrigerator in the room, no ice machine. But these were minor inconveniences and not to be expected in the historic building.
