The Spotlight on Three Horseshoes Inn

Charming Countryside Comfort Just Minutes from Durham

Modern hotels are great—but sometimes, a cozy, centuries-old inn with countryside views is just what you need. The Three Horseshoes Inn blends historic charm with modern comforts, set in a peaceful location just a 10-minute drive from the heart of Durham. With timber beams, quirky original features, and a welcoming atmosphere, this inn is ideal for music lovers looking for a more relaxed stay away from the bustle.
Rooms are comfortable and homely, complete with tea and coffee facilities and double-glazed windows overlooking the scenic landscape.

Why Concert-goers love it

Concert-goers appreciate the quiet countryside setting for recovering after a night of live music. It's just a quick drive to major Durham music venues, and the peace and quiet makes it easy to wind down. With a 2:00 PM check-in and a 11:00 AM check-out, there’s room for flexibility. Guests also enjoy the inn’s warm, laid-back vibe—perfect after a high-energy show.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends seeking a scenic base with a pub on-site
  • Solo travelers catching that once-in-a-lifetime gig
  • Couples turning a concert into a romantic weekend
  • Fans looking for a quiet space to unwind post-show
  • Budget-conscious music lovers wanting value with charm

Food and Drink Options

The inn’s timber-framed restaurant serves hearty British classics, perfect for pre- or post-concert dining. The bar is well-stocked with local ales and wines, and a full English breakfast is served daily—a lifesaver after a late night. While room service isn’t 24/7, you’ll find generous meal portions and warm service during dining hours.

Nightlife Options

While there’s no live music on-site, the pub atmosphere is lively and friendly—great for a pint before heading out. Durham’s nightlife, including bars and music venues, is only a short drive or taxi away. It’s a peaceful place to return to, with none of the late-night noise.

What People Say

Guests rave about the friendly staff, delicious food, and unique character of the building. Many highlight the excellent location for exploring Durham and the comfort of the rooms. The countryside views and warm hospitality are often mentioned as standout features.

Areas for Improvement

It’s a charming old inn, so don’t expect modern hotel frills like elevators or high-tech amenities. Some guests mention that the building’s age means slightly creaky floors and a bit of unevenness here and there—but that’s all part of the charm.

The Bottom Line

If you're after a peaceful, affordable, and character-filled stay near Durham's concert scene, the Three Horseshoes Inn offers the perfect countryside retreat.

Great weekend away, comfy beds,...

Liked: Room was small but cosy and had lovely bathroom with large walk in shower. Comfy beds and ample tea/coffee making facilities. Very hearty/ large cooked breakfast with lots of choice, including vegetarian option. Had steak and ale pie for evening meal which was really tasty and the vegetables were cooked perfectly; great value for money. Also liked the separate entrance to the bedrooms.

Two pairs of visiting guests...

Liked: Both breakfast and evening meals were EXCEPTIONAL!!!!!!Extremely tasty and very good menu choice with copious portions. The surrounding views of the Inn were relaxing. Please note- Traffic noise from road outside could affect sleep for some guests. Also, whilst I do not own an electric car, charging points would be useful for those that require them.
Disliked: Leaving hotel!Missing Sunday roast lamb!

A nice place to stay,...

Liked: We had a meal at dinner time, it was really delicious, and the price was reasonable. The room was good size, the bathroom was quite big, both were clean and comfortable.12 minutes drive to Durham, easy access.
Disliked: Two options from the breakfast menu were not available: porridge with blueberries (only honney was available), and toast with smoked salmon and egg. It was quite disapointing.I ordered hashbrown with pouched egg and mushroom, but I would like to have toast with jam when I finished my dish. I had to find the waiter and order toast, in my opinion, the toast should be put on the table. Or, at least, the waiter should ask if we wanted toast. The noise from the road, as it was warm and we left the window open; and people leaving the pub during the evening and chating out lound outside. The shower was leaking water to the floor. When I finished my shower, the floor was flooded.
