The Spotlight on Thistle Hotel

Classic Georgian Charm in Edinburgh’s West End

A stay at the Thistle Hotel means soaking in historic charm while being just minutes from some of Edinburgh’s top music venues. Set in a quiet street in the elegant New Town, this family-run hotel blends traditional Scottish character with the comfort of large en-suite rooms, free WiFi, and a cozy bar. Just a short walk from Haymarket Station and the shops of Princes Street, it’s well-located without the chaos of the city center.

Why Concert-goers love it

Concert fans love the Thistle’s location — tucked away from the noise, yet just a 10-minute stroll from Haymarket and a short hop to the city’s major venues. You’ll find a peaceful night’s sleep after the encore, and the Manor Lounge bar gives you a relaxed space to wind down with a local whisky. The 15:00 check-in is perfect if you’re arriving in town on show day, and the 11:00 check-out gives you time to recover the morning after.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a classic stay with character
  • Solo travelers catching a dream gig
  • Couples planning a romantic concert weekend
  • Fans needing a quiet spot to recharge post-show
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who don’t want to sacrifice comfort

Food and Drink Options

The hotel offers a continental breakfast included, with a hearty full Scottish breakfast available for an additional fee — ideal after a late night. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the Manor Lounge bar serves drinks in a classic setting, and you’ll find several great restaurants and late-night eateries within walking distance.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself is more retreat than rave, the Manor Lounge is a great place to start your night with a dram of whisky. Step outside and you're close to Edinburgh’s West End bars, relaxed pubs, and live music spots — all within easy reach.

What People Say

Guests rave about the hotel’s quiet yet central location, the authentic Georgian architecture, and the friendly, welcoming staff. Many highlight the surprisingly spacious rooms and the classic Edinburgh feel that’s hard to find in more modern chains.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests mention the hotel could use a few modern touches, especially in the bathrooms. There’s no lift, so those with lots of luggage or mobility needs should plan accordingly — but staff are happy to help.

The Bottom Line

For concert-goers seeking a quiet, character-filled stay within easy reach of Edinburgh’s music scene, the Thistle Hotel hits all the right notes.

Good

Liked: Friendly staff, helpful with information for parking and letting us know what was going on in the hotel.
Disliked: No where to pull up to drop off bags, unless you paid for parking. Very out dated and could use a facelift. No elevator

We loved Edinburgh, would love...

Liked: Close to castle, walking distance to centre, very helpful staff, especially Andrew, quiet location.
Disliked: A little tired, could do with a revamp but that would put up prices

Liked: Nothing
Disliked: The whole hotel is filthy, falling apart and I am surprised it can still exist in its current state . Everything was not fit for purpose including the ironing board which was more like one for a kids toy set - see photo

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Looks great from the outside,...

Liked: Location was good, lots of shops, cafés, bars, restaurants in the immediate neighbourhood, easy access to public transport (tram, bus, train). Entrance and lobby very nice (Georgian building). Room was quiet, bed was comfortable, staff was friendly. Possible to store bags before and after stay.
Disliked: When we first arrived to drop off bags, reception was open but no one there. We stood there ringing the bell for 10 minutes. I then ventured upstairs to try to find someone who was cleaning a room and had not heard the bell. Why have a bell then? Better to put up a sign to say "I am up on the x floor cleaning, come find me". Disappointed to have had a room in the basement, in front of our door (which was VERY difficult to close) there was a big bag of dirty linens and a package of toilet paper on the floor in the corridor. The shower felt dirty - caulking needs replacing. The hotel is in an old, charming building, but definitely needs refurbishment.

Could be improved

Liked: Location was excellent, and the breakfast was decent for the price. Staff was nice and helpful. Our room was quiet.
Disliked: The hotel is a bit tired and needs a renovation. Cleaning service could be improved. We had problem with the shower drain and the safe but the receptionist was nice and helped us resolve it in a timely manner.

Crap

Liked: I didn't like anything.
Disliked: My room was next to a public toilet. You can smell when people used it. It was not what was shown in the pictures. It was deceiving. There was no staff in the bar when we went there to get drinks and we waited for a while.

Grubby poorly maintained room. Not...

Liked: Location isn't bad
Disliked: We arrived late, 10.30pm to be met by a very surly receptionist. We were given room 1 which was in the basement. The room was obviously in need of decorating and there were very obvious stains all over the carpet and the furniture was scratched and well used .The window was being held open with what appeared to be a piece of pipe. In the bathroom the soap dispenser was broken and the sink did not drain well. The grout on the tiles around the bath was black in places and the sealant was yellow and in need of replacing. There was also hair around the area behind the taps and the shower, an attachment on the bath taps was difficult to control the direction of.As for the beds one of my daughters complained she could she could feel a spring but the other 2 beds seem comfortable enough if a little soft for my liking. One of the duvet covers a stain on which looked like some kind of sticky mark and the under sheet on one of the beds was very heavily stained, it appeared no attempt had been wash it. I'm afraid the hotel stays was not pleasant and I certainly don't recommend this room.
