Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Building history, restoration exceptional staff...

Liked: The building itself was very good with unique features and modern architecture (use of glass in restaurant and bedrooms was very good) the staff were friendly.
Disliked: We stayed for 2 nights from Friday to Sunday in a superior king room. on being shown the room by a very friendly staff member after he left we were shocked by the awful smell in the room. A combination of damp and drains, stale odour. We thought initially it was maybe the room hadn’t been used for a few days and opened the windows . But after returning from dinner in the restaurant that night the smell hadn’t subsided at all. We reported this to the desk when we went down for breakfast and they confirmed they would investigate. On our return to our room they’d placed a reed diffuser in the room but this had not improved the odour. We returned later that day after attending a family celebration to find the smell hadn’t subsided but got worse. We checked all around to see if we could find the source and it appeared to be coming from the bedroom wall. Once again we reported this to the staff and found another air freshener was placed in the room with a basic apology. No offer to move rooms or any compensation was offered just a sorry. When we departed on the Sunday after leaving windows wide open during the rest of our stay. We noticed that the main outside building wall that was outside our room had a large mental air duct pipe running directly up the wall (some short of duct from the kitchens below) our conclusion was that this was the course of the putrid smell)!!!!! And would have certainly been known by the senior staff . The restaurant menu was also sadly disappointing for the price and selection of food uninspiring.

Lovely spot

Liked: Beautiful room, well appointed, comfortable bed. The restaurant has fabulous meals, but disappointed at the lack of non alcoholic drinks choices over and above soft drinks.

The staff, and the food...

Liked: The breakfast was great, all staff very helpful and very accomadating. Location is great, can leave the car in the car park and walk to local pubs and resturants.
Disliked: On arrival the toliet was not clean, which I did report. The wardrobe space is only any good if your about 3 feet 6ins tall. The room is very small for two people and two suitcases. To sum up, the room is quaint, quirky and cute but not over practical for more than a short stay.
