The Spotlight on The Washington

Charming Bristol Stay Just Steps from the Music

A characterful base for your concert getaway, The Washington sits in a beautiful Grade II listed building in the heart of Clifton. Just a short stroll from Bristol’s buzzing cultural and music scene, this hotel offers classic charm with thoughtful perks—like complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits, and fruit in every room. You're less than a mile from the city centre and minutes from must-visit landmarks like the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Bristol Museum.

Why Concert-goers love it

The location is a standout—just a 3-minute walk to key Clifton venues and only 2 miles from Temple Meads Station, making post-show transport easy. While it’s close to the action, the quiet residential street offers a peaceful retreat after a loud night. Late check-in from 15:00 gives you time to explore before the show, and the friendly staff are used to guests on music missions.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends looking for a chill base near the nightlife
- Solo travelers ticking off a dream gig
- Couples making a weekend of it in Clifton’s charming streets
- Fans wanting a quieter place to unwind post-show
- Budget-conscious music lovers who still want a solid breakfast and great location

Food and Drink Options

Start your day right with a full English or continental breakfast included in the room rate (continental only on Mondays and Tuesdays). While there’s no late-night restaurant on-site, you're surrounded by Clifton’s independent cafés, pubs, and eateries. Stock up on snacks with the complimentary in-room treats or grab a bite nearby before heading to your venue.

Nightlife Options

The Washington is surrounded by Bristol’s vibrant bars and local pubs, many with live music, craft drinks, and late-night vibes. Whether you're looking for a lively post-gig pint or a quieter cocktail, you’re in good company here. No on-site bar, but plenty within a short walk.

What People Say

Guests love the friendly staff, great location, and the charming character of the building. Many mention the breakfast as a welcome bonus after a night out. It’s praised as good value, especially for a central location that’s still relaxed and peaceful.

Areas for Improvement

Some reviews note that the décor could use a refresh, and the older building means a few squeaky floorboards—but most agree it adds to the quirky charm. Parking is limited and costs extra, so plan ahead or opt for public transport.

The Bottom Line

With its prime location, friendly vibe, and breakfast included, The Washington is a smart and cozy choice for concert-goers looking to enjoy Bristol’s music scene without breaking the bank.

Great location, friendly staff, comfortable...

Liked: Clean, friendly staff, great location.
Disliked: Extra charge for parking. However they did let us stay in the Car park after checkout so we could explore the local shops

A good stay at a...

Liked: Location was excellent, bed was comfortable. A fan was available which was brilliant in the very hot weather.
Disliked: Some areas were not as clean as they could be, for example the window sill in dining room. The bathroom was very snug and the shelving was not great, I was worried they were going to fall off the wall when I pumped the handwash. The English breakfast was not available on our first day, but the continental offering was ok - croissants would have been a good addition though. The second morning, English breakfast was available, but the sausage was horrible and the food could have been served a bit hotter. Staff were excellent.

Good to average guesthouse

Liked: The soft furnishings, bed was very comfortable. Fruit supplies in the room on arrival. Clean and good location.
Disliked: Room was dated especially the bathroom. No Aircon in room. Lots of stairs and no lift. Otherwise it was adequate for my needs. No cooked breakfast as the chef was poorly and no replacement chef. Breakfast buffet was good as an alternative option though.

Great for dogs with owners

Liked: Location, lovely local walks and views, dog friendly, close to dog friendly pubs and cafés, cheerful staff.
Disliked: Had to ask for room to be hoovered after 3 days, coffee mug not changed or tea/ coffee in room topped up

Adequate

Liked: Great location, room was an adequate size. Tea/coffee making facilities in room with some fruit and biscuits. Hairdryer in room.
Disliked: Room was baking hot and due to noise from nearby pub garden couldn’t leave the window open when we went to bed.Bathroom was very tired and shabby. No cooked breakfast on Sundays which we and all the other people in the breakfast room were not aware of previously. Vegan options extremely limited on a Sunday, basically toast and cereal. Not very nice bread even but the worst thing was the rudeness and abruptness of the waitress on the Sunday. She belittled two separate guests in front of everyone for no good reason at all, simply for making polite enquiries. Atmosphere was very subdued and unpleasant. Certainly wouldn’t stay again.

Nice staff but the rooms...

Liked: Location, easy check in.
Disliked: One shower on my floor was broken the other barely produced any water at all.The breakfast was very limited, even for a continental one, not much selection.Bathrooms were not great, old towels lying on the floor, empty toilet roll holders left on the floor.

Poor - 1.5 out of 5

Poor

Liked: The hotel is in a fairly good position in Bristol. The free breakfast (which isn't free as it is included in the cost of the booking) was very reasonable on the Saturday morning with a nice cooked English breakfast. But on Sunday morning when we went to breakfast and were served a hot drink, the waitress then vanished. After 10 minutes she appeared again and when we asked if we could order a cooked breakfast we were then informed that there was no cooked breakfast today. There was no apology. The selection available was very poor and the quantity was poor too.
Disliked: The parking is terrible. They say they have a car park which when l arrived l was told it was full, despite phoning 20 minutes in advance to ask if there would be a space and I was reassured that there would be spaces! I was told to park on the road, which has very restricted hours and different confusing rules for each nearby road. From my room l could see that the car park was nearly empty, apart from about 4 cars that l guess are the hotel's only parking places. (Staff?)

Would not stay agsin

Liked: Staff were really lovely. Breakfast tasted good
Disliked: Review for The Washington Guesthouse, BristolAbsolutely disgusted with the state of the room.Bad points:•Bed throw was filthy•Hair gel pot left on the floor – clearly no proper cleaning done•King size mattress dumped on top of twin bases, overhanging at the sides, and so old it’s basically collapsing•Plug socket broken – unsafe•Uneven floor throughout•Bathroom stinks of must and damp•Toilet is loose and wobbles when you sit on it – unacceptable•Extractor fan in bathroom doesn’t work and the bathroom window doesn’t open properly (slides back down after opening a couple of inches)•Lovely paint work (not) – scuffed, dirty, and peeling in places•Beautiful view out the window of staff on their fag break•Walls are paper thin – can hear every single noise from other guests all nightBreakfast:•Poor choice for vegans – it’s just a normal breakfast with the meat taken off. No vegan options at all.•My son chewed the bacon like it was leather and then gagged on the vile sausage.•Fire alarm went off during breakfast because they burnt the toast – absolute chaos.I spoke to reception about all these issues, which were passed to management, and I was offered a 25% discount. While I understand they may think this is a positive gesture, it shouldn’t have got to this point in the first place. Rooms should be clean, safe, and fit for purpose without guests having to complain.Frankly, it’s a disgrace. As a paying customer, I shouldn’t have to complain to get basic things like cleanliness, decent food, or safe, usable facilities. The room should be 100% ready for guests – no excuses. Anything less is pure laziness, lack of care, and disrespect for people spending their hard-earned money.Good points:•Lovely receptionist – really friendly and helpful•Great selection of coffee, tea, flapjacks and a cafetiere in the room•Fruit provided in the room•Shower very powerful•Big room•Location is good and easy to get into town
