This is an older hotel, with small rooms and a small, older elevator. If you have catastrophe you would not want to spend the night in the room. A great place to eat, drink and socialize.
Liked: Food, drinks and people.
Disliked: It was just okay.

Liked: Cozy room; comfortable bed & bedding.
Disliked: Noisy patrons; non-working light in bathroom; room a little hot.

When I booked my reservation I chose this hotel based on the assumption that since the price was not cheap and the pictures looked so high end that the hotel staff would be up to par as well. Assuming gets you no where and I should have known. Upon entering the building you are immediately taking in the deep red color scheme and the vintage decor. When me and my husband walked up to the front desk (at roughly 5pm) there was already a woman being helped by the one employee behind the desk. We waited patiently to be acknowledged, then I had to use the restroom - I returned to find my husband still waiting. After 10 minutes or so we decided to order drinks from the bar, which is located in the lobby. The drinks were poured and served. Still not so much as a "Welcome to the Washington Inn" or "I'll be right with you". I was becoming irritated at this point as we had dinner reservations in an hour or so. When the woman ahead of us finally left, the very young man standing behind the desk asked if we needed to check in. I wanted to reply "nope we just like to hang out in hotel lobbies while holding suitcases" but I didn't. He did say "thanks for being patient" but I felt that a greeting to start with would have been nice and gone much further in terms of what I expect from someone who works in the service industry. I was asked for my ID and credit card - after both my cards were declined I knew it couldn't be me. He called the manager who told him over the phone to restart the router. At this point me and my husband had been waiting in the lobby of this fine establishment for almost a half hour just to check in! I was not about to wait for a router to reboot too! No way in hell. I kindly asked if we could please have our room keys now if I left my credit card at the front desk, so we wouldn't be late to our dinner. The young man did give us our room keys but still no apologies for any inconvenience or acknowledgement of time we had been waiting. I was in shock. One thing to keep in mind if you do choose to stay here is that there is no parking, no lot, no garage. You either have to pay $15 a day at the convention center across the street or find parking on the street and pay an hourly rate. Really sucked waking up at 8 am to go put money in the meter when you're supposed to be on vacation. To top it all off: the broken elevator. Our room was on the 3rd floor of this abnormally steep staircase and the elevator was broken. Now if you were the young man behind the front desk this would have been the perfect opportunity to redeem yourself by offering to help us carry our bags up 3 flights of stairs, right? No such luck. I hope the staff of the Washington Inn can read this and improve their service in the future. Cheers!

Convenient for BART and cheap
Liked: Convenient to BART (Metro system) for travelling into San Francisco, and for the Bay Area it was cheap. One good restaurant (Agave - Latin-Mexican good quality) but up at 22nd street. Free shuttle from bus stops on Broadway till 9pm so if eat early then can get shuttle both ways from 22nd to 10th Street where hotel is. If using room in evenings it is worth getting a "parlour room" as extra room next to bedroom with microwave and fridge (in serious need of defrosting though) and a supermarket ("Smart & Final") a few yards from hotel if planning to eat in room.
Disliked: Breakfast finishes exactly 9am and immediately cleared up. No gluten-free food at breakfast except a hard boiled egg. No decaffeinated coffee at breakfast - sachets in room for coffee maker but they ran out of those before the end of our stay. Ran out of butter on the last morning. Lift like hotel - something from the 1950's and noisy. Starting from ground floor despite pressing floor number the lift often went to basement (doors opened and finally closed) then back up to ground floor (doors opened again) before finally going to desired floor. Staff average at best. Noisy on Saturday as party in function room.

Nice funky little hotel
Liked: Nice clean room! Very conveniently located near BART, Jack London Square, right across from the convention center and not far from the ferry terminal. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again!
Disliked: Funky old elevator, but it works. Door locks for a bit wonky as well. these are small rooms and you stepped down into them so people who need a lot of space or have issues with balance, or steps might find them difficult.

Not clean and very shabby
Liked: Good location
Disliked: Filthy. There was a black hair in the bathroom and the shower grout was filthy. Uncomfortable lumpy bed. Terrifying elevator. Broken sink in the room. Carpet ripped and unsafe. Never again.
