Old school hotel with a...
Liked: Great communal areas with tea, coffee, chilled water and plenty of ice. Staff are friendly and helpful and the location is great with plenty of cafes and bars nearby as well as close access to the subway.
Disliked: Aircon is a bit noisy (as were the neighbours one night!). Our aircon needed servicing as it was producing a smell but this was done promptly.

Excellent hotel, will stay here...
Liked: The room was immaculate and extremely well decorated, completely new fittings etc. The lobby and the rest of the hotel was also beautiful and welcoming. However, the best part for me was the location - right in the middle of everything, with incredible bars, shopping, and restaurants nearby, as well as easy subway access. The staff was also incredibly responsive and helpful.
Disliked: not much!

Liked: Location was excellent, close to great restaurants and cafes.
Disliked: No closet or drawers. We hate living out of suitcase. Should have tea/coffee facilities in room as well, that way you can have whenever you like.

Fine but not fabulous.
Liked: The staff were very friendly and helpful
Disliked: The room was pretty worn. The pillows and bed linens were terrible. I still have a stiff next two days later. A huge spider was on the bed when we got there.

Great location, severely overpriced
Liked: The staff was very nice and the location is great. It was relatively clean, considering the fixtures/floors/windows walls are ancient and in great need of repair. The housekeeping staff definitely has a tough job.
Disliked: The hotel is clearly in the middle of a (loud and dusty) renovation and I guess they didn't get to our room yet. I had initially booked at higher-rated hotel very close by, The Allen, and switched ? even though it was a difference of $100 a night! ? because my friends were staying here, but now I regret it. The bathroom is severely outdated, with a tiny, cracked plastic stall that you can barely turn around in. There isn't even a closet ? just a bar attached to the exposed brick wall, which I understand given the economy of space. But there was also no minibar, or much of a selection in the vending area, especially because there actually aren't that many bodegas or drugstores that close by. (Also the TV had no NY1, which disappointed this former New Yorker!) They charge $10/a day for wifi even if you don't use it. I lived in NYC for 20 years and I know you can do MUCH better than this hotel for this price. (The Empire on the UWS, for example, is a steal, despite also being outdated and not in as convenient a location.)
