The Shore

Good

Liked: Comfy room. First time a hotel provided me with a French press! Has no reception itself, but is being managed by the neighbouring “the Kirkwall hotel” (which seems, overall, nicer in comparison). Ideal if you are taking the ferry back to Aberdeen (bus leaves directly in front of the hotel, comfy lounge where you can wait for the departure).

Very disappointing, not what you...

Liked: We liked Kirkwall, but I can’t say anything positive about The Shore hotel.
Disliked: We arrived off the ferry at 11.30pm and went straight to the hotel, there was a notice on the door telling us to check in at the Kirkwall hotel along the street. The guy took us along an alleyway to a side door. Our room looked ok at first glance in the dark, but it was cold and felt a bit damp. We were tired and went to bed expecting a good nights sleep but someone in the room above started pacing the floor at 12.30am, the floorboards creaked, this went on until about 2.30am. In the cold light of day the room was not what we expected for £242 per night. There was no sea view, we looked over wasteland and the dustbins. The towels were ragged around the edges, there were stains on the carpet, the window frames were filthy, blinds dusty, and black mould around the windows and in the shower. There was a rusty tin of ground coffee which we didn’t touch. We stayed 3 nights, the noise from upstairs continued until 1.30 both nights.We did t eat or drink in the hotel next door so could t comment.We didn’t complain as I would have found it too stressful

A lovely position on the...

Liked: The Shore itself is unattractive from the outside but the Kirkwall hotel is a fine old building! The rooms are nicely renovated and comfortable and spacious tho Bathrooms a bit cramped. The heater was efficient. Tea and coffee and nice biscuits provided. The main restaurant was busy and good.
Disliked: Unfortunately they were unable to resolve my lack of hot water in the wash basin and have offered me a partial refund..

Initially excellent impressions spoiled by...

Liked: Hotel went to great lengths to make room welcoming. Very clean. Very comfortable beds. Nice furnishings. Fresh coffee in room lovely touch.
Disliked: Found main entrance to accommodation wedged open when returned yesterday evening. Not secure as rooms only have a basic internal lock. Sane status when I left this morning. Loud internal plumbing woke me at 1am and was still going off every 2 minutes or so when I left just before 6. Getting a good nights sleep is critical for business traveller - would not stay again for that reason. It spoiled what were otherwise big efforts to make the accommodation nice.
