Lovely hotel in an excellent...
Liked: The fruit and yogurt side of the continental breakfast was good. The ambience in the hotel lobby was lovely and the location excellent. Easy to walk to the Thames where it was very pictureque and there were many restaurants, and also from the station with numerous and frequent lines into London. We could also walk to the beautiful Kew Gardens (where we had a private hour long tour which was excellent) and the National Archives, but caught a train back!
Disliked: On the one day we had breakfast we were told the chef had not come in so there would be nothing hot. There were no croissants and no facility to toast the sourdough bread that was the only option. We had breakfast in the town on the two other mornings. To be fair when we complained about the breakfast on leaving we weren't charged the £39.98.We had no working live televison in our room for the whole 3 nights we were there as the main aerial was not working and could not be mended. The desk clerk was apologetic and did spend time trying to show us how to use YouTube which was our only option. The plumbing was also a bit noisy in our room. Hopefully these problems would be remedied for future guests.

Pretentious, overpriced, avoid
Liked: Very clean
Disliked: This hotel’s first priority is its image, and a lot of money has clearly been spent on the plush art nouveau look. The second priority is charging the most they can get away with to stay in this pretentious boutique hotel; bottom of the list is the comfort of their paying guests. The classic double room we booked was much too small for two people to be comfortable in, unless you were actually in the bed. I’m sure larger rooms are available however for £200 per night in a small hotel in Richmond (not central London) it is reasonable to expect a room two people can move in without the need to manoeuvre around each other.Let me be precise. The distance to the wall on one side of the bed was 45cm, on the other side it was 57cm; ie, the width of the wardrobe door to enable it to open fully, though you need to be on the right side of it to put anything in or take anything out. The wardrobe was tiny, with a rail and hangers back to front, and therefore awkward to negotiate in such a tight space. (photos attached) The only drawers were two small desk drawers. There was a coffee machine and one bottle of unlabelled still water which was not refilled on day two. No safe, no fridge, not even a box of tissues. The bathroom was also very small. Here too, apart from bottles of anonymous shower gel, shampoo, etc, no basics were provided; no cotton wool pads, tissues or earbuds not even a cup for toothbrushes; incredibly there was also no ventilation! However, worst of all, the shower in the smooth and therefore slippery bath is a disaster waiting to happen. I do not understand how Health and Safety have passed this as safe. There is no anti slip surface and of course no bath mat as this presumably would spoil the ‘look’ which is the only thing that seems to matter at the Selwyn. It took three trips down to Reception for them to properly activate the heating/air conditioning; yes it is controlled centrally.
