Superb
Liked: Warm helpful staff. Tidy beautiful hotel. Good breakfast. Will definitely consider returning next time I'm in Melbourne.
Disliked: Open shower so water escapes and drenches the bath mat. A small quibble for what overall was a wonderful stay.

Love the hotel and location....
Liked: The hotel is elegantly beautiful, and everywhere in it is spotlessly clean. Bed and linens were first class. The location is across the road from Southern Cross Station, one of the two main city stations with links to everywhere else in Melbourne and where the bus to and from airport arrives and departs, and on the route for the free tram that circumnavigates the main city area, yet out of the way of the bustle of the centre. The breakfast buffet is very good value. Held from 6:30-10am in the Savoy Restaurant, it is a perfect cross between a great European breakfast and an English breakfast, with choices for Asian tastes as well—delicious coffee, fresh crusty bread and sliced bread to toast (and a toaster for gluten free bread separate from the other bread selections), assortment of cheeses, meats, vegetables, sliced and whole fresh fruit, yoghurts and chia puddings with fruit, cereals, juices, pastries, scrambled eggs, bacon, chicken sausages, fried rice and various other hot dishes. There are local papers set out for reading, and the layout is such that the food counters are not crowded. Coffee is sensibly situated at a comfortable distance from the food choices.
Disliked: My room was a good size but just a little depressingly dark because it was facing a small side street with tall buildings opposite. I was unable to get a room that was brighter—my room was a twin room and apparently all the twin rooms are on the 4th or 5th floor (of 9), so basically low enough to be surrounded by taller buildings. I think the only twin rooms with a brighter aspect would be those at the front of the hotel facing Spencer St, none of which were available at the time of my visit. The Savoy restaurant was not able to offer several items on the menu, which was disappointing to find out only once one was seated. The 200gm steak fillet I ended up with ($49 [aug2025]) lacked flavour, and was served with three cocktail tomatoes as it's only vegetable, all other sides had to be purchased (e.g. $15[aug 2025] for a ramekin of mashed potatoes). Given the abundance of good restaurants in the area I would only recommend this restaurant if the prices were more reasonable or the presentation had more flair or was more aesthetically pleasing.
