The Royal Hotel

The rooms were very comfortable and well equipped - it was lovely to get more than a couple of teas, coffees and milks. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Shame I only stayed one night - I have already recommended it to my work colleagues.

Deep clean needed

Liked: The staff were friendly. Food portions very good and quality good
Disliked: The filthy state of our bathroom - it neede a deep clean. I could not use the shower as too dirty. Carpet in our room stained & marked. Cob webs on the ceiling. Corridor lighting really poor came on too late .Dining room carpet disgusting. Report sent to Hotel & I tried to report it to BookingComNOT ACCEPTABLE DEFINITELY NOT A HOTEL I WOULD RECOMMEND

Liked: We aren't big breakfast eaters so it isn't a big deal for us.

Apart from the shower problems,...

Liked: Apart from the bathroom, our room was fine, as was our dinner. Breakfast was self service and a bit limited.
Disliked: Our shower didn't work. The shower was attached to the bath taps but no way of switching bath taps to send water to the shower head. A fitting was there but tap was missing. After many attempts no way of working could be found and therefore it was unusable. The "automatic" lighting on the corridors to our room upstairs didn't always work, and a few times we were left in the dark waiting for a light to be able to see our way.

Disliked: Some maintenance issues need an eye keeping on. Eg in our first room the bottom half of the bed base had collapsed. The room was changed straight away no fuss. Second room, toilet seat not attached properly. Generally carpets in rooms suffering from tea stains and need carpet cleaning.These issues didn’t detract from our stay and I would return as the positives definitely outway these issues. But they have the potential to drag the hotel down if not kept on top of.

Disliked: Breakfast sausages were very overcooked. Very quiet at breakfast. Maybe a bit of quiet background music to add some atmosphere?

Good but not great

Liked: Very welcoming and approachable staff. Hard working. The restaurant menu is varied and the food is good enough. The waiting staff couldn’t do more for you.
Disliked: Dogs are allowed to stay. So I got woken up a few times in the night because of the barking. My bathroom didn’t smell great either. Didn’t smell uber clean. I don’t think it was value for money BUT I do realise how expensive it must be to keep a hotel running. Places like the Royal Hotel can’t compete with the big chains on price. The staff gave me the impression that they are doing the best they can.
