The Spotlight on The Royal Hotel Cardiff

Historic Charm Meets Modern Comfort in the Heart of Cardiff

Modern style meets Victorian elegance at The Royal Hotel Cardiff, located right in the city centre. Housed in a Grade II listed building from 1866, this boutique-style hotel blends historic charm with contemporary features. Just a 2-minute walk from the Principality Stadium and close to Cardiff Central Station, it's a favorite for music lovers who want to stay close to the action without sacrificing comfort.

All rooms feature air conditioning, LCD TVs, free Wi-Fi, and some even offer stadium views. Whether you're catching a show, shopping at nearby St David’s, or exploring Cardiff’s nightlife, you'll find this hotel puts you in the center of it all.

Why Concert-goers love it

You can’t beat the location—just a short stroll from Cardiff’s biggest venues. Being so close means no scrambling for late-night transport after the encore. The hotel is surprisingly quiet given its central location, making it ideal for winding down after the show. With flexible check-in from 3PM and a comfy, relaxed vibe, it's a great base for your concert weekend.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends who want to stay together near the music
  • Solo travelers ticking off a bucket-list gig
  • Couples planning a romantic weekend around a concert
  • Fans seeking a quieter place to crash after a loud night
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who still want style and location

Food and Drink Options

Fitz's Bar is open late and serves up snacks, light meals, and cocktails made to order—ideal for post-show cravings. Breakfast is served in the historic oak-paneled Scott Room (yes, where Captain Scott had his farewell dinner!), and is available most mornings, even if you’ve hit snooze a few times.

Nightlife Options

With bars, pubs, and music lounges just steps away on St Mary Street, you’ll have no trouble finding a place to keep the party going. Prefer to take it easy? Head back to the hotel’s chilled-out bar for a nightcap and some local chat.

What People Say

Guests rave about the location, calling it “unbeatable” for concerts and events. Many highlight the friendly staff, comfortable beds, and the unique mix of historic décor and modern amenities. The views over the stadium from some rooms are often mentioned as a bonus.

Areas for Improvement

Some guests mention that the historic building means slightly quirky layouts, and a few say the rooms could use a refresh in places. If you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the street to avoid late-night noise from nearby bars.

The Bottom Line

With its unbeatable location, historic charm, and easy walk to Cardiff’s top venues, The Royal Hotel Cardiff hits all the right notes for concert-goers looking for comfort and convenience.

Do your research if driving.

Liked: First impressions of the room was nice. Plenty of floor space to lay our 2 suitcases and 2 hand luggage. In the cupboard is tea and coffee making stuff along with iron, ironing board, safe and hairdryer that is attached to the wall and a mirror inside the wardrobe.
Disliked: If you have bags you can walk from the car park up the mall in a few minutes but if you want to avoid the steps you have to keep walking and go around the back to the lift up to Reception. We didn’t. We went up the 5 steps up to the door then down 8 steps to the lift without too much fuss. Reception is on the second floor then we went up in a different lift to the 3rd floor and our room.If parking in the NCP Carpark in Westgate Street (there is a discount code) the come out, turn left to the stadium and turn left. Go past a pub and a convenience store to close the corner and you will see a door to Royal Hotel. Just inside the door is a lift. Take that up to the second floor to check in.The towels are small and can’t be wrapped around our bodies, which we like doing as we rest after a shower. The shower is in the bath and there are no handrails up high so this can be treacherous. We used the bathroom door to assist us.The bed, although big is a spring mattress and feels cheap to sit on and worse to sleep on. My shoulders and hips ached during the night and I had to turn often to get comfortable (we are near our 70s). There is also a ridge down the middle where 2 singles have been pushed together but there is no topper so don’t have any ideas of sleeping anywhere near the middle for fear of slipping through the crack. The curtains don’t black out the room so the room was light and we were awake around 5am.There is air conditioning but it can’t be set to anything lower than 19 degrees but it’s still warm. Other hotels we’ve stayed at 19 hits you as lovely and cool when you enter the room, but not here. It still feels warm.We asked for our room to be cleaned on the second day. The sheets were not changed even though we had raspberry stains on them, but the bed was made. We got new towels. They didn’t wash our mugs (used for our coffee on the morning) but the tea and coffee were replenished. They didn’t wash our not clean the floors.
