Keith, Romsey, visiting New Theatre Oxford Tue, 2 October 2018

Hotel public areas were good. Morse bar was good. Parking was a bit dear, but OK. Breakfast was as expected, but my room let it all down.

Liked: Breakfast was good.
Disliked: Room view wasn't! Room was less quality than what I expected for the money. In fact, I am sure I was given an ordinary room.

Fabulous in every way that...

Liked: Superb breakfast. Superb service in the Morse bar. Superb standard of the drawing room. Everywhere clean throughout. Yes a few joining areas are a bit shabby. BUT THE BEST ADVICE MY FAMILY AND ALL OUR FRIENDS CAN GIVE YOU IS AS FOLLOWS :- WHATEVER HAPPENS - DO NOT - REPEAT DO NOT -AMERICANISE THIS QUINTESSENTIALLY ENGLISH HOTEL INTO THE FAIRMONT CHAIN STYLE. MY GRANDFATHER WAS HEAD WAITER HERE IN THE 2ND WORLD WAR. HE FED HALF THE STREET HE LIVED ON , WITH LEFTOVERS , FROM THIS PLACE. IT WAS A FANTASTIC CHURCHILLIAN STYLE OF SUPPORT IN TIMES OF GREAT NATIONAL NEED. IT REACHED OUT TO ALL CORNERS OF THE CITY. ENGLISH TRADITION AND HISTORY FORM THE VERY HEART & SOUL OF THIS PLACE. IF YOU KILL THAT WITH A SUPERIMPOSED LATEST TREND FOR CHAIN HOTELS - YOU MIGHT AS WELL BULLDOZE IT AND START AGAIN. THERE IS A PERFECTLY GOOD OVERALL ENGLISH MANAGER IN PLACE TOO. HE WILL BE THE VERY BEST STEERING WHEEL THRU REFURB AND BEYOND.. FOR GOD SAKE DONT REPLACE HIM BY SOME FLASH HARRY WITH ZERO INTEREST IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN CASHFLOW. NEWS WILL SPREAD FAST AND THE TOWN AND GOWN WONT THANK YOU OR PROMOTE ITS NEW FORM. QUITE THE OPPOSITE IN FACT. WHERE WOULD YOU BE WITHOUT THAT KIND OF ENDORSEMENT ? YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RELIANT UPON CONTINUITY. This is above all - an INDIVIDUAL HOTEL LIKE NO OTHER.
Disliked: The threat of takeover by change for the sake of change. So much core stuff needs to be retained.

Lovely hotel, staff overwhelmed

Liked: It?s a lovely looking hotel with period features and a wonderful history.
Disliked: Sadly the staff seemed overwhelmed. I believe there happened to be a wedding on and one member of staff happened to be quite rude whilst we were waiting for our room to be ready and practically refused to seat us anywhere (after we were told we could sit down), so we ended up standing around in a busy lobby. Thankfully another member of staff acted a while later and got us seated with an apology and a complimentary drink. It?s just not what you?d expect for the price we were paying. Then we made our way to our room, only to find the key card didn?t work. I appreciate times are difficult and we?re all having to adapt but a smile would?ve gone a long way, which seemed to be lacking from most members of staff.

Grand in many ways, spoilt...

Liked: Superb breakfast, magnificent evening dinner, brilliant service at both meals. Concierge staff were REALLY good at their job.
Disliked: Our room, lovely in & of itself, overlooked 6-8 air conditioning units on the flat kitchen roof in the central well of the hotel. The attendant noise meant we weren't happy to open the windows. Certain aspects of the adapted bathroom fell short of expectations but the Maintenance Manager assured us that the full refurbishment, about to start, would take care of such issues.
