Husband's Birthday Meal

Liked: We had heard great things about this place. The room was lovely, bed was comfortable, plenty of tea, coffee and milk. Staff were friendly and the location was fab, breakfast was lovely.
Disliked: Bathroom shelf was covered in toothpaste marks and there was a dirty pillowcase left on the bathroom floor, toilet rolls had not been topped up, this was rectified quickly by the Manager, and when I used the shower that had not been cleaned properly. We had been told at check-in that a couple of things weren't available on the menu as they had run out, we booked a table for 7pm, it was my husbands birthday and we were looking forward to the meal as we had heard great things about the food, when we were ordering we found that quite a lot of the menu was not available my husband finally decided on a chicken kebab and I chose the pate, the kebab was hard and crispy obviously reheated and my pate was warm. For the main course my husband settled on a burger and I chose fish and chips, my husband said the burger was ok not great, my fish batter was spongy like it had been sitting around the kitchen for a while them warmed, the oven chips were luke warm and I think my mushy peas were straight from the can into a ramekin, I didn't eat my meal I did mention it to the young waitress when she took my plate but I was still charged full price for both meals. Very disappointing although as I said in the other section breakfast was lovely

Thank goodness we spent little...

Liked: Fabulous breakfast and helpful if inexperienced staff. Plus ideal location to attend a family member wedding at Brinkburn Priory
Disliked: Where to start… dirty room that was poorly maintained, my wife was burnt in the shower due to the tap not working properly and she couldn't turn it to cold plus extremely hot with poor ventilation. Also, we stayed in room 5; my brother and his partner stayed in room 3 which was immeasurably nicer in terms of size, coolness and overall finish and yet we paid the same. We feel extremely short changed. Very poor signage when we arrived too; the sign for reception sent us into the gents toilet!

The accommodation was OK but...

Liked: Breakfast was good
Disliked: Food. Approximately half of the menu not available at 6.30. on a Monday night including all steaks and all plus except Venison and anything with mashed potatoes! (There is a Co-Op across the road with potatoes and most other food products) we ordered 2 of the few remaining starters only to be told some time later that they only had one left. We had ordered 2 Venison pies as mains. They looked OK and were hot but the pie crust was so hard it was difficult to cutand was way below any reasonable standard. The manageress asked if our food was OK and when told no she said we should have told her. Our response was there was nothing else on the menu we wanted to eat. In over 30 years travelling the UK this was a completely new experience and one not to be repeated. We were told that they had been very busy over the weekend and no delivery coming until the next day. If we had been told when we booked the table that there was a serious reduction of menu choice we would have gone elsewhere.First time visitors never to return

Liked: Room was fine, comfy bed.Good breakfast.Convenient for visiting Cragside (bus goes from outside hotel) and the St Oswald's Way walk.Amazing labyrinth stairs, landings to get to our room!
Disliked: Some of the downstairs and stair carpets were grubby and could do with replacing/cleaningAnnoying yappy dogs in the restaurant and breakfast (sorry don't like them when we are eating)
