The Spotlight on The Morar Hotel

Highland Charm Meets Concert Convenience

A traditional, family-run hotel dating back to 1902, The Morar Hotel offers a peaceful base in North West Scotland, just 3 miles from Mallaig—the southern gateway to the Isle of Skye. With stunning views of the Silver Sands of Morar and the Inner Hebridean islands of Rum and Eigg, this hotel delivers a tranquil, scenic vibe ideal for music lovers looking to unwind before or after an event.

Why Concert-goers love it

Just a short walk from Morar Rail Station and only 3 miles from Mallaig ferry terminal, The Morar Hotel is a convenient stopover for those catching gigs across the Highlands or hopping to Skye. The peaceful surroundings make it a top pick for those needing a restful night post-show. Check-in starts at 15:00 and check-out is at 11:00—perfect for sleeping in after a late night.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends exploring Scotland and chasing live music
  • Solo travelers ticking off Highland music festivals
  • Couples combining concerts with a romantic escape
  • Fans craving a quiet recovery space after the show
  • Budget-conscious travelers who still want epic views

Food and Drink Options

While not a late-night dining hotspot, The Morar Hotel offers an on-site restaurant serving traditional Scottish fare—perfect for a hearty pre- or post-show meal. There’s also a cozy bar for a wind-down drink, and tea and coffee facilities in every room. The 11:00 check-out gives you time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

Nightlife Options

This is the Highlands, so nightlife is more about quiet pubs than clubs. The hotel bar is a laid-back spot to recap your evening, and Mallaig’s local pubs are just a short drive away. If you're after a chill vibe with a dram of whisky, you’ll feel right at home.

What People Say

Guests rave about the breathtaking views, friendly staff, and the peaceful ambiance. Many highlight the location as a convenient stopover en route to Skye or Highland music events. Reviewers also appreciate the comfortable beds and classic charm of the property.

Areas for Improvement

Some rooms could use a modern refresh, and Wi-Fi can be spotty—something to keep in mind if you’re live-streaming your concert night. Also, the remote setting means fewer late-night food or entertainment options nearby.

The Bottom Line

For concert-goers looking to pair live music with Highland serenity, The Morar Hotel is a scenic, stress-free stay with unbeatable views and easy access to Mallaig and beyond.

Friendly staff but overpriced

Liked: The staff were lovely, very friendly. Stayed here the night before we caught the ferry from Mallaig. Only 5 minutes to the ferry, which was fantastic. Had a tasty meal in the hotel, but was quite pricey for what it was.Bed was comfy. Dog friendly. Easy walk to the beach.
Disliked: It was a fairly basic hotel. Definitely overpriced for what it is, particularly considering it didn't include breakfast. The room was clean but there was black mould on the silicon in the shower. Room was very hot and you could only open the top part of the window a tiny bit.

Superb

Disliked: A minor criticism is that at the buffet breakfast there were no milk jugs there so it was back to the drinks station once my tea was brewed. I solved this next day by using a teacup in place of the absent jugs.

Liked: As I was catching the early morning ferry to Skye and missing breakfast the lady made me up a packed lunch, free of charge.I last stayed at the Morar hotel in 1970. It had moved a bit up-market since then!

Exceptional

Liked: The only thing more spectacular than the views were the friendly staff!
Disliked: This has little to do with the property itself but the train schedule is limited. Rent a car if you want explore the area past 7 pm.

Liked: Everything wal great. We arrived a bit late due to the traffic but it was no problem - the communication with the staff was very good and they had no problem with that. The room was clean and spacious, the bathroom was also clean. Would recommend this accomodation.
