So close, yet...
Liked: The common areas in the hotel are beautiful.10 Out of 10!There is attention to the smallest detail. The view from The Terrace is sublime and the most popular area. Together with the sunken gardens and The Glasshouse, they make up for the biggest asset of this hotel. The swimming pool is big, which is excellent. Good Gym as well.Nice and stylish cinema area, very cleverly done.Restaurant; very good!! Can truly recommend to have breakfast at the hotel. Not expensive and very good. We had lunch and dinner there as well, both very good.Cleaning; excellent. The experienced General Manager went around the breakfast area greeting his guests and talking to them. This is not only clever but from what I could tell, also appreciated by guests.Staff; all very very friendly and helpful. There were a couple of "little confusions" where 1 staff member would say one thing and ask someone else, you would get a different answer. But apart from that, they were brilliant. The hotel may be beautiful but in the end, it is the frontline staff that make the difference.Although meeting Ken, will probably end up on the -top 10 things to do in Cork- list, the other gents were amazing as well. There is this young gentleman who will go on an interrail journey soon, he was so welcoming. He was the one bringing our luggage to our apartment upon arrival. I tend not to ask for names of staff, unless they tell me themselves. Then there is this Irish lady at breakfast, she could be a one-woman Irish welcoming committee. Absolutely wonderful! Very genuine! I can spot fakery from a mile away. Then our Spanish friend from Barcelona who has a friend living in Haarlem. He would always come to say hello to us and have a little chit chat. We stayed from Sunday to Saturday so we became quite acquainted with the team. Then there is Kyra at reception. She followed through on what she had promised to do and 1 of her colleagues had failed to do so.
Disliked: In one word, the apartment!I can only comment on our residence and not other accomodation. We were assigned residence 158 on ground level, a 2-bedroom apartment. Good size.Coming from the hotel and walking in to the apartment, was a disappointment. The attention to detail is not present here. Again, the common area for the residences is very pretty but once inside, the beauty fades and you feel deflated. The lounge was fine and as shown on the pictures. The sheer curtain in the lounge was missing.Utensils in the kitchen, to a bare minimum. E.g. normal pair of scissors or a knife to peel a piece of fruit, not present. The drawers in the wardrobe in the master bedroom, were stuck. When opening the door of the wardrobe, one would hit the lamp. The ensuite in the master bedroom, dated with a small shower with little water pressure. The main bathroom is dated as well. There is a batthub with a shower curtain and a fixed shower head. The hook on the door was missing so nowhere to hang your towel or bathrobe.Bathrobes are not catered for. I had asked for some extra towels and housekeeping brought me towels, slippers and 2 bathrobes, which was very good. Housekeeping does a good job, everything is spotlessly clean. There are no hooks in the hall for coats/jackets. Really? Why??However, there is an enourmous apparatus in the hall that makes a lot of noise, also (especially) during the night. I guess it is the boiler. Nevertheless, what a nuisance! There is no airconditioning . It was not needed now but in the summer months it will be very hot. We had lovely weather but the apartment got quite warm.Wardrobe in the smaller room does not open properly either, because of the curtains. There is 1 shelf but so high that we could not use it. Really, who is that tall? Not enough hangers. The window latch in this room was loose. Dishwasher drawer was rickety.
