The Spotlight on The Mey Hotel

Historic Highland Comfort with a View

Modern charm meets traditional style at The Mey Hotel, a beautifully refurbished 19th-century coaching inn nestled in the peaceful village of Mey. Just 8 miles from John O'Groats and surrounded by stunning Scottish landscapes, this award-winning hotel offers a quiet, character-filled retreat for travelers exploring the northernmost reaches of the UK. With cozy rooms, heritage details, and views of Dunnet Head and the Orkney Islands, it’s perfect for unwinding before or after a concert adventure.

Why Concert-goers love it

The Mey Hotel is ideal for those attending intimate gigs and local music festivals in Caithness or venturing to events in Thurso or Wick. After a night of music, guests appreciate the serene atmosphere, making it easy to recharge. While not in a bustling nightlife hub, its free parking and quiet rural setting offer a relaxing contrast to louder venues. The free WiFi in the lounge bar also makes it easy to upload clips from the show or catch up on setlists.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends looking for a scenic base with character
- Solo travelers ticking off bucket-list gigs in the Highlands
- Couples making a romantic weekend of it
- Fans seeking peace and fresh air after a lively show
- Budget-conscious music fans who prefer charm over chain hotels

Food and Drink Options

Guests can relax in the on-site bar after exploring local venues, and the hotel’s traditional lounge with a flagstone fireplace is perfect for a nightcap. While there’s no mention of 24/7 room service, the hotel’s warm hospitality means you'll feel well looked after. Breakfast is available, ideal for those who’ve stayed up late enjoying music. Plus, local eateries and pubs are a short drive away.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself doesn’t offer live music, its bar is a cozy spot to wind down. For more action, nearby towns like Thurso and Wick feature pubs and small venues that occasionally host local artists. The quiet location makes it a great choice if you're looking to enjoy the show—then escape the crowds.

What People Say

Reviewers regularly praise the hotel’s friendly staff, spotless rooms, and stunning views. Many love the traditional charm combined with modern touches from the recent refurbishment. Guests also highlight the tranquility and easy access to scenic walking routes and wildlife viewing.

Areas for Improvement

The rural location means you’ll need a car to reach nearby concert venues or late-night food. Some guests mention that the WiFi is only available in the lounge bar, so don’t count on streaming in your room. But hey, a digital detox might be just what you need after a loud night out.

The Bottom Line

For music lovers seeking a scenic and peaceful base after a Highland gig, The Mey Hotel delivers charm, comfort, and quiet in equal measure.

If you are in this...

Liked: A lovely small Inn/hotel that met all our needs on the NC500. We loved our room which was quiet, clean and comfortable. Emma and Euan thought of everything including lots of little touches. The food was top quality and exceeded our expectations along with special touches and amazing service - we felt most relaxed.PS - car parking easy and Euan (cooking dinner) wore tartan trousers.
Disliked: Scotland seems to like a 4pm check-in. Some flexibility on that would be lovely.

Very pleasant stay - will...

Liked: Had a lovely stay at the Mey Hotel on the first night of our NC500 road trip. Hosts were very welcoming and friendly, and both evening meal and breakfast were excellent. Room was clean and comfortable and we had everything we needed. Walk around the grounds was very pleasant and we enjoyed the Tunnocks tea cake and wafer
Disliked: Nothing really.
