The 5 AA Red Star Merchant Hotel is in the Cathedral Quarter of Belfast's city center. It offers luxurious air-conditioned rooms free Wi-Fi a spa and a rooftop gymnasium and hot tub. The Merchant is the winner of the Best UK Hotel 2011 award in the International Hotel Awards. All of the elegantly appointed rooms are decorated with original artwork. They each have black-out blinds a flat-screen TV and spacious en suite marble bathrooms. The Merchant is a Grade I Listed building dating back to 1860. Its Great Room Restaurant has a huge domed ceiling and offers a fine à la carte menu and traditional afternoon teas. There is a selection of bars including the Veuve clicquot champagne lounge. Berts Jazz Bar serves food and has live music 7 nights a week. The Spa has 5 treatment rooms and a hydrotherapy area. There is also a sauna and a steam room located on the rooftop.

Romantic, very short stay

Liked: Breakfast was wonderful. Loved the service and the area. I saw people bring some of the breakfast home with them which I think is a great touch
Disliked: The cocktail bar(where the breakfast was the next morning was staid. We went out instead. I didn't get a chance to look at the downstairs area which may have been better.

Lovely hotel but not 5...

Liked: The hotel itself it to a high standard visually
Disliked: Requested repeatedly to be able to check in 15 minutes before check in time due to dinner reservations for a birthday. Despite requesting this several times it was not possible, for a 5 star hotel it was poor service that house keeping timings are so close to check in time not allowing for any buffer. Was offered gymnasium facilities to change in, however not the spa facilities. As a result was late to a surprise birthday dinner. Also at 3pm check in only 1 person was on reception, despite us arriving first others were directed to check in before us. Poor service

Just amazing!

Liked: It was close to all activities, we got a free upgrade and complimentary breakfast, everyone was so kind and helpful, and the doorman was very kind, helpful with recommendations and any questions we had.

Spectacular Stay with a Great...

Liked: The staff was superior at this hotel. The cocktail bar cocktails were truly handcrafted right down to the ice. The service was impeccable. The spa was also very nice as well as the wet spa within it. The regular hot tub on the roof was not very hot and the guy was a little tight. But overall they maximized the space well. The hot tub on the roof had a lovely view of the city and champagne and other drinks were available as well.
Disliked: Lighting was a little dark and no outlets in the bathroom made drying your hair a little challenging. However I am in another hotel in Ireland now with the same experience so it may be an Ireland code type thing.
