Very Good - 4 out of 5

Gary T, Thunder Bay ON Canada Sun, 20 October 2013

Very casual at the Marlborough - I liked that. The old world charm of the hotel. The cleanliness was superb. The staff at the desk were so helpful. Our room was very spacious. More than big enough to get an extra cot in the room. My son hurt his leg and a security personnel brought us a cane to use for the rest of our stay. The complimentary breakfast is the best I ever had, and very good service. Rooms were really clean every day. For one who would only expect a very fancy hotel and small rooms and a high price tag this place is not for you. When you enter, it has a lot of beautiful hardwood and there is a nice bar you can enter from the main floor. The only drawback is there is no parking for the hotel itself. You must pay a price at the parking lots across the street - you have a couple of choices. Smack in viewing distance to all the concert theatres and a multi theatre cinema, and a 2 minute walk to the MTS Centre for the Jets hockey. You cannot ask for more. For an older hotel and a good price downtown do not pass this one up.

Liked: Very nice stay.
Disliked: They do not have their own parking lot.

Disappointing - 2 out of 5

Donovan, Bloomington, visiting Burton Cummings Theatre Sun, 12 May 2013

Wouldn't stay here again. It's not because I'm pretentious it's due to the fact this hotel services indigent population. Our water was brown coming out of the faucet. No one is paying attention to this property and it's visibly worn out. Price and location is good for concert venues but the fact that I had to check in while watching a drunk next to me in the lobby with his zipper down and had urinated on himself was a joke. This place needs to set standards that will attract repeat bookings.

Liked: Nice staff. Close to venues.
Disliked: Worn out lobby, decor; clientele indigent drunks.

Pleasant - 3 out of 5

It was close to MTS which is where I was headed! My room was outdated and the elevator was really slow. I liked that we received free breakfast with our stay, and the bed was comfy. We couldn't get the AC to work though.

Liked: Location; food.
Disliked: Outdated rooms; restaurant hours.

Poor - 1 out of 5

Matthew C, Winnipeg, MB Mon, 3 October 2011

The rooms were very sketchy. The minute I walked in, I felt dirty and didn't even want to set my bags on the floor. Prime example of a roach motel. The bed was an old spring bed mattress which made it very uncomfortable. The shower was either ice cold or boiling hot as I was standing there with soap in my eyes trying to make adjustments to the faucet. Never did and after 30 minutes in the shower, I gave up, still feeling dirty. Would never in a million years recommend this hotel to anyone ever.

WARNING! RED ALERT!

Liked: Comfortable bed, VERY quiet room - heard no traffic at all
Disliked: About a week prior to my reservation, something had come up and I wanted to cancel my reservation. The hotel refused, so I changed one date.Dirty outside entrance, LOTS of people outside smoking, hanging out, loitering. My first greeting from security was, "Are you on the list?" I said I didn't know about any list. He repeated the question and I repeated my response. I then proceeded to check in.The night clerk asked for my ID, took it and WITHOUT my permission, he took a copy of it. I asked what the hotel would do with it and he replied that I 'could ask any hotel' and they would do the same thing. I repeated my question. He showed me a stack of what I suppose were other travelers' photocopies. I asked what would happen to mine and he said the hotel kept them. I asked for how long and he didn't know. I said that when I left I would like to have the copy back. When I arrived at my room, after figuring out how to get there (no signs that included room 511), I asked for a wake-up call. The next morning I was awake at 7:30, but no call came. I asked for another wake-up call the next morning. Again, no call. The day clerk insisted that he had programmed it in (I believe him) and suggested that there is a glitch in the system that needs investigating. The second night, about 2:00, I awakened by screaming, banging, obscenities, and had to call the desk 3 times before it was quiet. The elevator is dirty with garbage in the corners. The doors close EXTREMELY quickly and the first morning they hit my hand as I was entering and I still have a bruise with swelling. It is really a shame that this beautifully appointed hotel has deteriorated to this extent. The restaurant is gorgeously decorated. This hotel was once probably the star of hotels in Winnipeg with stunning architecture and old-world design. It is centrally located and within walking distance of most of downtown Winnipeg.

Good

Liked: The hotel was in a very convenient location. I live two hours out of the city, and I was going to a concert at Burton Cummings Theater so I didn't want to have to drive home that night, and the Marlborough is less than a 5 minute walk away from the venue, so that was great. The free breakfast was lovely too, and the room was comfortable enough.
Disliked: As I have read and experienced, there do seem to be a lot of people hanging around outside and in the lobby of the hotel, which made being a lone female traveler a little unnerving. Not having free parking is also a huge inconvenience, but for my one night stay it wasn't overly expensive. My main complaint is that there were a couple small stains on my bed sheets, which wasn't a nice sight.
