A mind-blowing experience. That's all...

Liked: Can't praise it too highly--my room was a mind-blowing mix of high-end art and kitsch. And did I mention the books?! And the records? Loved the stained glass and the sunroof; and the bedroom walls painted green and yellow--so bold and gorgeous. I'm all about color, music, and light, and my suite was a delight. There were too many astounding pieces to call them all out individually, but in particular the early Janis Joplin and George Harrison photos: I think I nearly fainted! What a delight it was to keep company with all that memorabilia. Already thinking about my next stay and which room I want to inhabit. : )
Disliked: Okay--the bed was gorgeous but not too comfortable. There was a gap between the mattress and the headboard that the pillows couldn't quite make up for. It would have been nice, given the size of the suite, for it to have an actual couch and coffee table for in-room dining.

Liked: I booked a night for my husband's birthday because he loves adventurous things. The owners are very friendly and inviting. The place is so outrageously decorated, everything is interesting. The whole place was basically ours to explore after the normal operating hours. I highly recommend booking a room and exploring after the tourists have left. It's close to all sorts of amazing museums and restaurants. You can take a quick walk to the metro if you need to go anywhere else in the area. It was like staying at your rich eccentric friend's house. We really felt like we were at home, but with adventure added. Definitely want to stay again.
Disliked: Wasn't enough time to see everything we wanted to and some sections were off limits for staff only so we didn't find all the secret doors we think we could have, but there's no way to know for sure. Still loved the place.

Disaster that made me laugh

Liked: Funky place. For non-business travel if you don?t mind being inconvenienced by little details could be fun unusual experience. However, for business travel it is awful. Hard to get in and out of building at odd hours. No easy way to check in or out. Hard to find your way around the labyrinth (it is like the Winchester Mystery House owned by an orderly hoarder). No mirror in the room or easy to use mirror in the bathroom. Almost impossible to stand in front of sink so tight. Hot water takes forever to come. Need to climb 5 stairs to get to shower stall. Door to room does not lock. No place to hang clothes. No room refrigerator. So many pillows on the bed took five minutes to clear it...

Pleasant

Liked: We were lucky and stayed in the Rosa Parks House across the street. We had the Versailles room on the top floor.
Disliked: The rooms in the Mansion are incredibly cluttered, with visitors to the museum tromping thru all day. For the exorbitant price, coffee should have been provided.

Glad we stayed; don?t know...

Liked: The hotel is in the center of Dupont Circle, close to metro, walking and so on. The street is residential. Garbage trucks, which are not their fault, are busy in the middle of the night. it is definitely an eccentric stay. You have quite a bit of privacy. Security, I am not so sure about
Disliked: We couldn?t find staff, and had difficulties getting questions answered. We gave up. The maid service is sketchy. Those people were did meet were nice. Not necessarily informed of what is around the hotel, or locations. the stairs are narrow, and on the outside, slick. the maintenance on these wonderful row houses is very sketchy. If you have any trouble navigating stairs, or uneven floors, or sidewalks with heave, this is not a place for you!
