Hotel Description
This 16th-century coaching inn has played host to both Dickens and Darwin. With beautiful Elizabethan decor The Lion is set within the heart of historic Shrewsbury. The Lion is a Grade I-listed building and guests can relax by the Tudor fireplace. The Pickwick Papers were written by Charles Dickens at the hotel itself and it has also been visited by the 19th-century Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli as well as the legendary violinist Paganini. Rooms offer unique furnishings with renovated decor and original features. Private bathrooms are included in each room along with a TV and tea/coffee facilities. The many historic streets and shops of central Shrewsbury can be reached within 5 minutes on foot. Pride Hill and Darwin shopping centers are both less than 10 minutes' walk away and Shrewsbury Rail Station is a 15-minute walk from The Lion.

Excellent, we will be back!

Liked: Disappointed that the hotel didn’t do breakfast but plenty of cafes in town to get breakfast. Room was a lovely size with plenty of tea/coffee provided. Location was excellent! Great staff, lots of history within the building, could actually make more use of some of the communal rooms.
Disliked: Nothing not to like - It was a great, quirky hotel!

Liked: Location and on-site parking.
Disliked: External appearance was shabby. Internal reception area looked tired and in need of refurbishment. Worn carpet on stairs and in my room (117). Shower pipe leaked badly at mixer tap and this resulted in flooding on the floor and rotting wood on bath side. I reported it to reception twice but it seemed the maintenance guy thought there wasn’t a problem. He can’t have turned the shower fitting on!
