The Spotlight on The Inn at the Union Club of British Columbia

Historic Elegance Steps from Victoria’s Live Music Scene

A charming, old-world hotel in the heart of downtown Victoria, The Inn at the Union Club of British Columbia blends classic Victorian décor with modern convenience. Located directly across from the Inner Harbour and just a 10-minute walk from the Victoria Clipper ferry terminal, it’s a sophisticated spot to stay close to the action, yet just enough removed for a restful retreat. Think antique furniture, elegant lounges, and a rooftop terrace that opens in summer.

Why Concert-goers love it

This hotel is perfectly placed for easy access to some of Victoria’s top concert venues, including those around the Inner Harbour and downtown. Despite its central location, things stay relatively quiet at night, making it ideal for a peaceful post-show wind-down. With a check-in time of 16:00 and check-out at 07:00, early risers or Clipper ferry travelers will appreciate the flexibility. Plus, the cozy McGregor Lounge and on-site billiards room offer relaxing social spaces to keep the night going.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends who want a classy base near nightlife and venues
  • Solo travelers catching a bucket-list artist and seeking a quiet retreat
  • Couples looking to combine live music with a romantic weekend
  • Fans wanting peace and quiet after the encore
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who appreciate historical charm over frills

Food and Drink Options

The on-site McGregor Lounge serves food and drinks all day, ideal for a pre-show bite or a nightcap. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the central location means you’re within walking distance of plenty of late-night eateries and cafes. Breakfast is available—perfect for a slow start after a late night out.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself leans more toward classic charm than club vibes, you’re just minutes away from downtown Victoria’s nightlife—including pubs, cocktail bars, and live music spots. The billiards room and lounge make for a mellow evening in, with a touch of old-school flair.

What People Say

Guests love the hotel’s historic atmosphere, central location, and quiet ambiance. Many highlight the walkability to major attractions and venues, and appreciate the unique character of the rooms. The rooftop terrace is a favorite in summer months, and the McGregor Lounge earns praise for its cozy vibe and service.

Areas for Improvement

This hotel doesn’t offer ultra-modern amenities, so if you’re after sleek design or high-tech features, it might feel a little dated. Some guests mention that certain rooms can be on the smaller side, and the early 07:00 check-out might not suit those wanting a full sleep-in post-concert.

The Bottom Line

A classically stylish retreat in the heart of Victoria—ideal for concert-goers who want charm, convenience, and a quiet place to recharge.

Very good

Liked: Everything was great, people, food, amenities like the reading room. It is like staying in a 1950 movie set. A place frozen in time.
Disliked: There is a strict dress code. We are not dress up kind of people so the dress code was a bit of a pain and in several cases didn’t make a lot of sense. My only shoes were Hokas and those were specifically banned.

Gotel needs to make up...

Liked: Old English vibe a bit like staying in an old Eastbourne Hotel. No lift, no tea making in rooms ,no Air con and stuffy atmosphere, didn't feel welcomed by anyone except the excellent reception staff, albeit could print or show me my final bill because 'something ' wasn't working
Disliked: Stuffy atmosphere , didn't feel welcomed

Pleasant

Liked: The location was and exterior and public areas were impressive. The staff was very courteous.
Disliked: there was no elevator and since we were travelling for a long journey and our luggage was heavy They offered a porter who was nice but we almost felt guilty as he was so young and weak Also the rooms were small and ill equipped no kettle no Aircon One had to come down to the lobby for a cup of coffee which is inconvenient on vacation Also the fans were small and not efficient for the warm summer The parking was not meant for a large height suv and was difficult to find parking The furniture in the room had aged badly The view from the second floor of the room was terrible and looked out to the dirty roof top .The first floor suite was decent size and had a reasonable view.

Probably a nice place to...

Liked: The staff were very friendly and kind. The location was excellent.
Disliked: About two weeks prior to my stay i was informed that the elevator wouldn't be working during my stay. As i was attending a large conference i had no option to change hotels. Also, there is NO air conditioning at this hotel and no screens on the windows. The nights were very warm making sleeping difficult and the birds from the harbour and the early morning street cleaner were very loud.

Dirty and disgusting

Disliked: Staff were rude when asking for a jug of water and rats running round the restaurant. Would call it more like a budget hotel. Not worth the money at all. Your get better value for money staying at a holiday inn. We got $100 off for the inconvenience but to be honest the night me and my partner had there they should have given us more. Would not recommend this place at all. This place is not worth the hype

Nice staff but tired facilities.

Liked: The location and staff were great.
Disliked: Our room was not equipped for two people. Only one bedside table, only one small shelf in the bathroom for toiletries. The carpet was dirty. The elevator was out of commission.
