The Spotlight on The Hotel Zags Portland

Artful Downtown Escape Just Steps from the Music

Modern and full of personality, The Hotel Zags Portland is a boutique hotel nestled in downtown Portland, just a few minutes’ walk from the city’s vibrant live music venues and cultural spots. With over 500 pieces of local art on display, a cozy outdoor fire pit, and a stylish vibe, this hotel blends creative energy with comfortable touches. Each room comes with a flat-screen HD TV, fridge, coffee maker, and work desk — perfect for unwinding after a show.

Guests enjoy complimentary continental breakfast, on-site dining inspired by the French and Italian Riviera, and access to a nearby 24-hour gym and lap pool. Stylish and welcoming, this is a downtown stay designed for both energy and ease.

Why Concert-goers love it

Location is everything — and The Hotel Zags delivers. You’re within walking distance of major venues and nightlife, but just far enough to enjoy a quieter night’s sleep. The 12:00 PM checkout gives you a little extra time to recover after a late show, while the 24-hour concierge is ready to help with transport tips or post-concert bites. Plus, the on-site patio and fire pit make for a great place to debrief the night with friends before heading in.

Who this Hotel is great for

  • Groups of friends looking for a stylish base near the action
  • Solo travelers checking off a bucket-list tour stop
  • Couples turning a concert into a weekend getaway
  • Fans who want a quiet space to recharge post-show
  • Budget-conscious music lovers who still want boutique comforts

Food and Drink Options

On-site, Zags Restaurant & Patio offers Mediterranean-inspired fare perfect for dinner before the show or a late bite after. While full 24/7 room service isn’t offered, the restaurant stays open into the evening and there are plenty of great eateries within walking distance. The complimentary continental breakfast is a nice touch after a night out, and coffee-making facilities in every room mean you can start your day at your own pace.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself leans more chill than party, you’re just a few blocks from Portland’s buzzing bar and live music scene. Craft breweries, cocktail lounges, and music venues are all nearby. Back at the hotel, the fire pit and patio offer a more relaxed way to wind down with friends and a drink.

What People Say

Guests consistently rave about the hotel’s artistic design and modern rooms, as well as the friendly, helpful staff. Many highlight the excellent downtown location and how walkable it is to concerts, restaurants, and the riverfront. The stylish yet comfortable vibe makes it a hit with creative travelers and music fans alike.

Areas for Improvement

This hotel doesn’t offer full-service late-night room service, which might be a miss if you’re coming in really late and craving a snack. Some guests mention that the rooms aren’t huge — but they’re well-designed and efficient for a short concert-centered stay.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a stylish, walkable downtown Portland hotel with local flair and quiet comfort after a show, The Hotel Zags Portland hits all the right notes.

Exceptional

Liked: Very clean and modern. Staff was super friendly. The private parking garage was affordable and secure. We had issues with the shower, which the staff immediately addressed and resolved, and was much appreciated. (We had come in from a week long camping trip and needed showers! They understood the assignment)

Pleasant

Liked: Position, modern structure
Disliked: Breakfast was minimal. I would have chosen another hotel at similar price just for that. I liked the idea of having breakfast included but it was not sufficient in our opinion.Noisy and not working AC.Parking is more expensive than other private parkings in the area, I recommend to go to those if you want to save some money.

Great hotel, bad breakfast

Liked: I loved the hotel. I stayed at the property a few times when it was the Modera. Great location, comfortable rooms, fun amenities and the "living room" patio was great. Lu Kas, Lyle and Rose at the Front Desk was superb.
Disliked: A hotel like this had a dismal breakfast. I cannot remember the last time I stayed at a hotel that had "hard boiled eggs." No bacon, sausage, ham!! No cooked oatmeal. Brown bananas. No waffle maker. I stayed at the Zag Hotel at the end of a road trip from Michigan to Portland. I was on the road for 6 nights and stayed at Best Western's along the way.. EVERYONE of the BW's had a better breakfast than the Zag!!! The coffee was great, but not much else in the breakfast was. I overheard other guests saying the same thing....dismal.

Fair location, great staff

Liked: The staff was very accommodating and friendly
Disliked: It's getting more common, but I like having to pay extra for parking. The included breakfast was okay. On Sunday, there were hard-boiled eggs but no breakfast meat. On Monday, there were no eggs or meat available
