A really lovely hotel in...

Liked: We had a great stay at Hotel Zags. We'd been a road trip for a week with a different hotel every night and were very glad that the first hotel we decided to stay for two nights was Hotel Zags as it was nicest room on our 16 day road trip. The decor is all stylish and modern and everything is very clean. We had a great view of the courtyard garden, Parking was easy either outside the lobby area or in the underground car park. There was an additional charge of $25+tax a night for parking. We saw that we could have parked cheaper in nearby garages though.They had a great area in the lobby with all kinds of equipment for sports and bicycles that could be borrowed for free. We weren't there long enough to make use of that but I loved the idea.The room was very spacious with a huge comfortable bed and pillows and lovely toiletries.The staff were all very helpful and friendly. The lady who checked us in gave us good advice about walking along the waterfront to a restaurant we had chosen. We weren't sure it was safe or a nice walk but she reassured us and was quite correct. We got a tram back which was a lot of fun. The hotel is on the bus and tram routes and very well located.Portland downtown and old town areas are 'interesting'. A shock to us and not a place we will return to unless we hear it has improved. We were very glad to have chosen Hotel Zags in a nice area of the city as some of the hotels I'd considered were in neighbourhoods I really didn't want to spend time in having walked by when sight-seeing.
Disliked: Parking in a garage up the road was $18.99 a day as opposed to the $25 at Hotel Zags.

Clean, safe, well situated hotel...

Liked: The clean and modern aesthetic. Everything was efficiently ran and the front desk staff (Mary) was fantastic!
Disliked: Not much was wrong

Good stay, I think I...

Liked: The lobby and outdoor space are amazing.
Disliked: The guest room feels and looks like an old hotel that’s been updated. It’s okay, but not great. Maybe because I had my dogs with me, I didn’t get a great room. That would suck since I paid more for my dogs to stay in my room.

Acceptable

Liked: Staff was ver friendly, convenient parking
Disliked: The AC wasn't working, the bathroom wasn't clean enough, and the restaurant's hours are inconvenient for hotel guests (it closes to early, no service on Sundays).

Pleasant

Liked: The position is nice, quite close to Pioneer Square.
Disliked: The hallways and the rooms were stinking. The carpet looks like it has never been cleaned since years. The first room I was given was disgustingly smelly and the second one less smelly, but the carpet was black, and apparently it should have been light grey. The carpet in the room was full of stains. Not comfortable at all. Sheets and towels were clean, but the overall feeling wasn't ok. The staff was almost rude. They never greet you and if you ask something it looks like you are disturbing them on most important matters. In the evenings was a little chilly, but there wasn't the heater. The facility has a restaurant, but they don't serve breakfast or lunch so in the mornings you have to walk around looking for other options. I would not call it "hotel"because it doesn't offer any facility for a business trip. I had been there many times before the ownership change, but will never use it again. Not worth the money.
